How safe is your safe?
How safe is your safe?
by Laura » Sat Dec 02, 2017 9:14 am
Unfortunately, we were burgled this week ( Calle half way between Patagonia Steak House and La Taberna) and had assumed our valuables were safe in our safe. Don't be fooled... Despite the safe being bolted to the wall the burglars still managed to steal the safe. All drawers in the house were emptied so best not to keep valuables there either. Talking to friends, not many people keep their valuables in their safe in case it is stolen or they use it as a decoy or have it cemented to the floor. Just have a think folks about where your valuables are and how safe they really are so if you are unfortunate and are burgled, hopefully you will not lose much.
At the end of the day, it is just things, no matter how sentimental, we were lucky, we had two old dogs in our house and they were not harmed. These were professional burglars, not opportunists, so watch out folks!

So sorry to hear this Laura but glad you are all OK including your precious dogs.
It must be very upsetting and infuriating when you do all you can to protect your property.
Thanks for letting us know and for the tips on thinking about where valuables are stored.
Thinking of you.
Jan.

Try to buy the biggest heaviest safe you can and have it bolted and cemented into a wardrobe or cupboard. You would need a sledgehammer and many hours to move the one in the house we bought.

Our safe was concreted in to the floor in our wardrobe but it still didnt stop us from being burgled in February. Using a concrete patio base and a boulder, they managed to stove the door in. Luckily, for all their efforts, it was thankfully empty as we were only over for a long weekend. But it proves previous points that nothing is safe, pardon the pun. Suggest you invest in a good burglar alarm....we did!!!

Many people wrongly assume nobody would be able to get into a safe. I have seen many just bolted to a wall thinking its secure. The walls are only terracotta and will come out easily if forced. If you insist on having one, make sure its inserted into the floor, cemented and secured with metal cross members. Don't buy a cheap safe as its false economy. But most importantly, like Paul said above, invest in a good security system which will alert you on activation. Don't chance it.

Paul Figg, you have summed up why I wrote this post, I was one of the people who thought my safe was secure and it was not, I wanted other people to think about their safes and if necessary, take more precautions.
Thanks Jan for your kind words.

No safe is totally secure.... if the burglar wants to get in they will..

When you buy a safe, or a lock, all you are buying is time...
multi layer your security..

Hate to tell you but the biggest private safe I,ve seen with nine shoot bolts (thick ones) was actually bent open apparently with hydraulic rams was quite a site so sorry for burglary also watch out for the bag thieves we've had a lot the last 3 weeks

How would the OP know, he wasn’t in!
I doubt that they were on the Nintendo or watching a box set of Game of Thrones, dogs don’t do that.
My guess is that they were asleep and when woken, plodded up to the intruder(s) wagging their tails hoping for a stroke or even titbits.
