Need an efficient and economical form of heating

Postby zeff » Tue Oct 07, 2014 8:33 pm

We are moving into Quesada in January and although our place has air conditioning h/c it does not have any source of heating (& no fireplace). Can anyone suggest any efficient and economical forms of heating based on their experience in dealing with a similar problem.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

Hi zeff
After spending our first full winter last year & like you no heating "system" apart from 2 halogen heaters & 2 oil filled rads which we found to be extremely expensive with the electricity (even though we are on dual tariff) the cheap leccie isn't in the evenings when you most need it!....Eventually we went for a log burner which was recommended by various friends & neighbours..yes we had the initial outlay for the burner etc but over the next 3/4 years we think it will have paid for itself taking into consideration our leccie bills for last winter!..Depending on where you live I spose another alternative would be the gas central heating...We have had our first delivery of logs & we're looking forward to the time when we can try the fire! Not much help I spose but thrown you some suggestions I hope !?!

Hi if you can get a log burner they are fantastic and a dry heat there are other threads on the site discussing the merits of them we have a freestanding one and its great although the flexibility of CH would be great if you have gas in the area.

We have gas central heating running off our own 1000 litre tank which is as good as UK. We have it filled once a year from a tanker which costs approx' 800 euros which for year round hot water and eight radiators when needed aint bad.

Hi yes they are ok but you may as well use your AC as long as it is inverter type.

We use the Imperitor electric heater. It is made in Germany, guaranteed for 10 years (we have had ours for about 6 years and we have another the same that our friend has left behind as he had to sell up and go back to UK). It looks like a small piece of furniture, on wheels and is very effective and economical. It can be left on low setting all night or whilst away from the house with safety. If knocked over it turns off. There is also a cool air facility and an infra red lamp (I have used this occasionally for an aching joint!). So a very useful piece of equipment. It will heat the whole downstairs or upstairs of a 2 bedroomed house, but probably not the whole house.

Were it not for the fact we have a wood burner in our lounge for the winter we would keep the second Imperitor ourselves for the upstairs.

They are, like anything worthwhile, expensive to buy. From memory I think it was about 400 euros, but that was 6 years or so ago and our friend bought one at the same time. There was a demonstration of them by the agent at a Chinese restaurant on Quesada with a free meal! We went because we were wondering how to heat the house. That was before we had the wood burner, but we still use the Imperitor when we dont light the burner.

If you are interested at all you could come to our house in Dona Pepa II and have a demo! I havent a clue how much our friend would expect for it but I can ask him and if you like the heater we can come to some agreement on the price.

There is a system that's is manufactured in the UK made by a company called Gledhill (thermal storage ) it can use any heat source I,m sure this would work very well in the this area of Spain as you can use two heat sources on this cylinder solar plus one other, basically you heat a large store of water with the cheapest form of heating and top it up with the convenient one,I personally fitted several of these in my younger days and they worked well.Retro fitting would I suggest be little bit expensive but could give high payback its life span.Gledhill have a web site.I spent 50 years in the business .
