Payments by credit/debit card

Could anybody tell me please if you still need to produce your passport when paying at supermarkets or restaurants in Spain. or will they accept the photo ID on your driving licence. Haven't been out for nearly 2 years, and got sick of having to lug my passport around every time I went out.

We were on holiday in Dona Pepa a couple of weeks ago and paid for supermarkets, restaurants, garages etc with our Halifax Clarity credit card. The only time we were asked for our passports was when buying tobacco.

Some shops ask for photo id all the time, others just when they seem to feel like it. Lidl had a policy of passport only for a while but I think they stopped then when a few full trolleys were left at the checkout.
Driving licence is accepted. Garages asked for photo id a while back but haven't been asked for it for some time.
AlCampo in Zenia Boulevard checked my id after going through the self checkout with a debit card and the bill was under 30 euro.

I really cannot remember the last time I was asked for ID, when purchasing anything.
I do look very innocent though. :D

You don't need to provide any other ID if you have a chip and pin card.

I have not had to show ID or Passport in any of the countries I've been to (Germany, UK, France, Spain & Portugal). I have used my Debit cards (German, UK and Spanish bank cards) everywhere...
And the adventure continues... :-)
