I did it last year. Can't recommend a hotel though, as we drove straight down, stopping about three times at service stations for a bite to eat, and fuel.
The route I took as the toll road from Bilbao to Zaragoza. Zaragoza rown to Valencia, and then Valencia across to here. The toll road cost about 25 euros,if I remember rightly. There was next to nothing on it, apart from UK registered vehicles that had been on the same ferry and the odd lorry. The Zaragoza to Valencia road was much the same. There's a bit of a confusing junction, just before you get on it, at Zaragoza but, it's easy enough if you've got satnav.
Valencia was the first place we really hit any traffic to speak of. It wasn't a difficult journey though. It took about 8 - 9 hours, including the breaks and yes, it's motorway all the way, unless your satnav takes a short cut through the mountains around Javea, like ours did.

The other way is to go Bilbao - Segovia - Quesada. Mostly motorway and toll free. Segovia is north, north, west of Madrid so is a pretty near halfway stop. A lovely town with an outstanding roman aqueduct. A must see. We have stayed at the following hotel http://www.sanantonioelreal.es/en/ which has free parking and is located at the start of the aqueduct. Ideal starting point for a site seeing walk into town. Price for two is around €75 B&B. Has a good restaurant as well. Your sat nav will find it easily.

Hi,
I use this route 6 times a year, travel from Bilbao - Burgos - Madrid - Quesada. takes approx. 8.5 hours, very easy drive, tolls amount to about 25€, my fuel cost approx 55€. I once drove for 4 hours without changing gear (Going North) Use M50 round Madrid if you use the Sunday night ferry from Portsmouth you will arrive Bilbao at about 8am Tuesday. This puts you near Madrid at midday and at the quitest time. Use the new bypass tunnell to avoid the traffic in Bilbao, cost is only about 1.50€. In 4 years using this route and this particular ferry I have never experienced a traffic delay. Motorway almost door to door.
A bit off topic but if going North use the same route as far as Burgos then travel to Santander catching the Saturday ferry to Portsmouth at 2030hrs. Tolls going North about 3€ fuel cost for me about the same (55€). Use the new motorway from Burgos - Santander, again motorway almost door to door.

Another vote for the two night crossing departing Portsmouth on Sunday night. Super relaxing journey on the Cap Finistere.
Arriving at breakfast time in Bilbao on Tuesday and with two or three comfort breaks arriving here at tea time.
Quite enjoy the drive on quiet roads, compared to UK at least. We have done this several times over the years and it works for us. The early arrival in Bilbao after a good nights sleep means the drive down is easily manageable in one day. We always go Bilbao - Burgos - Madrid Ring Road - Albercete - Benijofar.
The tolls are less if you use Santander but from a tiredness point of view, Bilbao is our choice

I did the journey a couple of months ago, using the Zaragoza route. We stopped at a hotel about half way between Zaragoza and Valencia, in a place in the mountains called TERUEL, and stayed in a lovely hotel on the edge of town called the Parador De Teruel. This makes it 2 days driving of about 4.5hours per day.

This is also our preferred route and have similar costs. We have done the eastern, Zaragoza route which is also very easy but rather boring scenery. In the past we (2 ladies and a cat) have done the trip in one go but this year decided on a stopover and like Marjim looking for a halfway stop. I found one on booking com. It is called Motel San Isidro and a bit more than half way but suited us anyway. Just left 3 hours of driving the next morning without a stop as we filled up at the service station next to the Motel. If you get the Tuesday Ferry you would arrive at the motel about 1930 with two 30 minute breaks. I can recommend the motel up to a point. It is very clean, lovely spacious wooden chalets and nice surroundings and you can have a meal cooked to order. Lovely showers etc. The only thing that would put me off staying there again was the cabin smelled of smoke but there was good air conditioning so you did not notice it so much after a while. If you are a smoker than I would happily recommend this Motel. It is very easy to find - it is in a service area off the A3 (exit 90) the road you would be travelling on so no fear of getting lost. Hope this helps.

A few years back I took the Bilbao- Burgos-Madrid- Albacete-Alicante route (524 miles) Took 8 hours with 2 short rest stops. Madrid can be tricky- follow signs to Valencia. Unlike France not many motels on the route unless you leave the motorway.

I make this journey regularly and always stay at Hotel Mavi, it is just outside Madrid and very reasonable. They have a website so have a look.
