Bringing a scooter to Spain

Bringing a scooter to Spain

Postby Tuftytoes » Tue May 15, 2018 11:43 am

Hi all,
My husband has a 125 cc scooter (AJS Moderna) and is considering brining it to Quesada, its on British plates. Are there any pitfalls with doing this? its not worth a great deal but it will only cost £125 to ship it out.

Thanks
carol and Owen Constance.

The headlamp would need to be changed, and whilst using it on UK plates it would need to be road-legal in the UK (valid tax and MOT, plus insurance - which could be Spanish).
It can be use on UK plates for upto 6 months, after that time it will need to be re-registered onto Spanish plates or be taken out of the country for a minimum of 6 months.
When re-registering, an engineer’s report and ITV (Spanish MOT) will be needed and import tax will be payable. This is based on the book value of the vehicle and it’s emmission levels.

On a slightly different note, a 125cc scooter can be ridden in Spain by anyone who has held a full UK car licence for 3 years. No need for a CBT and all that stuff.

Hopefully this thread isn't dead yet? If it costs 600/700 euros to import a 125cc and you still have to buy a headlight? Even with the poor pound is it a better deal to buy a Spanish scooter notwithstanding their high second hand values?
This is my dilemma!

Peter Knight,
I would beg to differ on your comment regarding riding a 125cc on your English license, i had been doing exactly that for a few years until i exchanged my UK license for a Spanish one. Trafico in Alicante advised me very strongly that you can't. YES you can once you change to a Spanish license BUT your entitlement on your English license remains as it were in the UK, 50cc ONLY.
I'm sure people will disagree but that is what i was told by the "officials" in trafico.
Regards,
Dave

Hi Pete, surely the only time that you can only drive a Bike up to a 50 cc is only when you have a car licence? I am 69 and got a full bike licence have done for many years now I also ride a 150 cc scooter,

Pete
