Car tax

Car tax

Postby Jordy » Tue Oct 17, 2017 4:28 pm

Whilst in conversation with friends the subject of paying your car tax in Spain came up.
I bought my current car (used) from an established and reputable dealer who dealt with all the
documentation & transfers, etc. I have been driving around for a couple of years assuming I
was all legal & above board. All of my utilities, taxes, Suma, etc are paid through the bank with
my solicitor sending reminders when tax bills are due. However, I left this conversation feeling that
I may have slipped through a hole in the net regarding the car. Should I have gone to the local Suma
office to declare my car ownership or would that have been done with all the other stuff by the dealers,
my solicitor or even the fairies? Can't believe I'm even having to ask this. My insurance renews every
year & ITV's etc don't flag up anything wrong. TIA.

Whoever owns the car on 1 January each year Is liable for the car tax. They generally send a reminder when this Is due for payment in March I think and they usually take it from your bank

Jordy, are you sure that the car has definitely been correctly transferred into your name? For example, do you have the "Permiso de Circulación" with your name on it?

I signed up with SUMA for online billing and my car tax bill appeared, as did my council tax bill, in my online account when it was due for payment - easy!
