Hiring a car from the airport

Hiring a car from the airport

Postby Flamencox » Sat Mar 25, 2017 10:36 pm

Hola fellow members,
can anyone help me please. Does anyone know if you take out an excess insurance policy in the UK for driving in Europe, do you have to pay the excess charges at the airport just a little concerned about leaving my bank details, (was thinking of trying record at Alicante ) as I do not normally use these car hire companies, have been using Lara cars in La Marina when in Spain but they are proving to be a bit expensive when I am over for a month. Any advise would be great fully received as I come over frequently many thanks

Funnily enough - I use Lara and as we expect to have about 5 or 6 hires of two weeks over the next 12 months I have in the last two hours just paid £32.95 for 12 months Cover - just in case we have any tyre / windscreen or unexpected excesses.

I am in the U.K. and fly out in 10 hours and pick up from Lara in about 12 hours :)

My 12 month cover starts at midnight :ugeek:

Yes bought in U.K. - but no - no reduction.
I know others will say - with the excess insurance - I can now use the "cheaper" airport based car rental companies - that take a huge deposit / credit card swipe from you - but I am still a bit concerned about doing that.

They seem to keep inventing ways of keeping hold of your money or making you wait and wait to get your deposit back and I don't need that sort of stress BUT I will be interested to see what others say who have recently used those types of rental companies.

I just wanted the comfort of knowing EVERYTHING was covered.

Buy the excess cover in the UK from a reputable company, and you're covered.

You do not need to take out ANY extra insurance with the rental company.

Taking out the insurance cover in U.K. Will be cheaper but the car hire companies will put an excess on your credit card none the less. They will not accept other policies as they do not get any commission.

Be very careful with record, I got scammed because I didn't take their insurance. Other companies seem to be no better which others may warn you about.

We use opencar in Quesada & airport. They are not the cheapest but I don't believe in really cheap car hire as I always think there must be a catch.
I always buy the excess4carhire insurance each year. Opencar don't charge any more than the advertised price and don't withhold any money on the credit card. They have an excess for damage but that's covered by our annual excess insurance. There is no need to tell a car company that you have excess insurance and they should not have any compulsory insurances at the desk. The excess also covers the add on that most car hire will often ask you to buy..for windows, wheels, roof etc. So you don't need that but always read the small print in the excess insurance to check.

Whatever you do, avoid Dickmanns. They take a deposit of over E1,000 from your credit card and it takes many months to get it back.

I hear you Murt, took nearly 3 months to get my money refunded, less the cash they kept for "TAX". Wouldn't touch Dickmanns or Do you Spain with a barge pole after my last experience, I'm sure they are operating hand in hand to fleece the customer.
