Charity collectors, tall good looking Scandinavian guys asking for money to pay a locksmith who won`t let them in until they are paid...€ 20 or 50 pesetas as it was for me... are a rite of passage moving here to Spain.

Until you are conned by any of these people, you haven`t really arrived. :D

Sorry to sound so flippant but this has been going since I moved here over 20 years ago and this Scandinavian fella must be Peter Pan because he hasn`t aged a day

My husband gave him the run around 20 years ago when we were living in San Luis. We were only new there but my husband called his bluff by asking where his property was and proved his lies. It was quite funny although I couldn't have done it.
A neighbour bought some paintings from somebody who called and was Burgled the next time they went out.
Best to just say no to anybody who calls uninvited.

Thanks for making me laugh.
Years ago, we had a very plausible man called a Frank who had driven all the way from Zurich with his wife and young child. They stopped on route and were robbed while eating in a service station. We gave him €50 ..he only asked for €20 but we really felt distressed for him and his family...never saw him again! My husband still hates him and I can’t blame him as he felt like an absolute fool for being so easily taken in by this charming scoundrel. Nobody gets near our house now...oh, sorry, forgot to mention the gas men who came calling some years ago too! IS it any wonder that I am sitting here laughing at how gullible we are? Thanks to this forum,we have learnt that this is not Northern Ireland! Don’t fool yourselves, there is always someone out there ready to take advantage of good hearted fools like us.

Always lock the front gate of the house. When in or out. No way for anyone to enter. It's a set of 12 steps up to our front door. I don't even have a bell. You cannot be cold called if they cannot get to your front door.

We do lock our front gate and front door. These collectors rang the bell and my husband answered. It could have been a friend visiting.
