My Husband gave money to a Charity Collector at the door

My Husband gave money to a Charity Collector at the door

Postby Shelles » Tue Feb 20, 2018 1:00 pm

Ive read on this forum that it is illegal to collect Money at the door but I hadn’t told my husband. So, this morning there was a knock at the door and a man saying he was collecting for a children’s charity which sounded like a good case so he gave him €10.

He also said there was a Fiesta in Quesada tomorrow. Is this true?

Thanks in advance.

Had he no children to give him? lol

I wouldn't give money to anyone cold calling at the door.

These people are very plausible so just say no to anybody calling at the Door. It's illegal to collect like that.. Watch out for fake Gas Men as well. They don't just turn up without an Appointment. People have lost hundreds of Euros to them. Another one is the man who is locked out. Another Con.

It is illegal to ask for money at your door or anywhere else for that matter. Never give to so called charities. Spanish do not do charity so Never ever give money to doorstep callers, gasmen or anybody else. They show you badges etc but they are usually false. Just beware!!!

I just had a call from a lady with a small child. She had "charity" collector written all over her. Then she showed me a picture of a parrot on her mobile phone, I got the impression they had lost the parrot and were knocking door to door to see if anyone had spotted it.

I felt sorry for her, then got to thinking that maybe she was just scouting out empty properties. These posts are making me cynical.

Spanish do not do charity?Best tell all these people then

Citizens Advice Spain is also a registered charity as is the MABS Cancer support group. All those people selling lottery tickets for ONCE are collecting for the national charity for the blind(Organisazion Nacional de Ciegas Espanoles).
However, they don't collect at doors. You may see them in the streets with their buckets and banners but be careful, those with just a printed card and notebook are not charity collectors.
But please don't ignore my next door neighbour when she's collecting for the Asociacion Espanola Contra el Cancer(AECC) at Zenia Boulevard now and again.
The gas men who come are not illegal. They offer a service and, if you accept it and pay, the police can't do anything about it. However, the proper gas inspectors from the big companies will not just turn up and knock on the door but will arrange an appointment. Those who just turn will charge well over the odds whilst the company ones charge a proper price.

I’ve had this problem in the past. I now tell them that I give to charity in the town hall and if they produce an official looking document, I tell them that I’ll check with the local police.
As soon as I take my phone out of my pocket and ring (usually a friend)! , they disappear..

You give they pass details on & you’ll get loads at your door none of which are charities. Some are even checking to see if the house is currently occupied. Do NOT give unless you are 100% sure the charity exists. There are loads of official fund raising schemes on the go at all times be safe & use your choice of what’s best for your donations.
