I'm in Benimar and think I may have the start of cataracts. Does anyone know of a good opticians that could do the necessary eye examinations to determine this for sure? I know there's one in Benimar but it always looks empty. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A good starting point would be the doctors... if not we have had great service from the Opticians next to Consum in Rojales, just behind the BP garage..

I would suggest Specsavers as they have the range of equipment to detect cataracts, as they did for me some 7 years ago.
Conversely, I was horrified last year when I went to a Spanish opticians locally and they didn't have the equipment to look into the back of your eye ...

If the Specsavers there are part of the same group as in the UK then I wouldnt use anyone else, they are very thorough and professional.
They routinely look at the back of your eye every sight test and take pictures of it for their records. They diagnosed my cataracts a few years ago and when they worsened they put me on the waiting list for our local hospital to have the ops. I am sure in Spain you wont have to wait 9 months each eye to get it done though.

As stated above go to Specsavers. In Manchester last year went for my biennial eye test and they discovered detached retinas in both eyes. This is highly unusual, in both eyes simultaneously, no symptoms whatsoever. Sent immediately to MRI Eye Hospital and underwent laser surgery that afternoon. Went back after one month for a check and had to have a top up laser treatment. All good now. Can't fault Specsavers or the NHS.

I recently had a problem with my eye and after trying various lotions I went to Specsavers in Torrevieja. They gave me a thorough examination and diagnosed an ulcer on my cornea and gave me a letter to see a doctor immediately, who treated me and everything seems ok now. So,I would definitely give Specsavers a try as they have all the equipment that I don't thin a Spanish optician. There is also one in Guadamar if you prefer to go there.

Optica Rodrguez 966 717 091. In Quesada by the garage. I had an eye test 1 year ago and the Optician told me I had a small cataract on my eye and I should see my Doctor who would arrange for me to see a specialist at Torrevieja Hospital. The Consultant told me it was not advanced enough to require any treatment but to go back to the Opticians in 6 months to see if it had worsened. I am due to see the optician again next week. There is no charge and he gives me complete peace of mind knowing I am in good hands.

When I went to Specsavers in Torrevieja it was a poor experience.. the staff were off-hand, hardly looked up, they all looked miserable...-- I felt like I was on a conveyor belt...
In Guardamar they were completely different...much nicer and I was treated as an individual..
If you are going to Specsavers I would NOT go to Torrevieja..

I agree with mondo. The staff at Specsavers in Guardamar are in a different league to those in the Torrevieja branch. There are 6 people at Guardamar, we have dealt with them all and they are all excellent, professional and friendly.
