Retinopathy scan

Retinopathy scan

Postby Anniep » Sun Feb 19, 2017 11:57 pm

has anybody been referred by their doctor for a retinopathy scan, similar to the ones you are given in the UK not just an eye test and look in the eye but a picture taken of the eye.

I used to have them annually in the UK, as part of a study. The Optician carries out the standard eye test & pressure test, then puts drops into your eyes, to dilate the pupils, which takes about 2-5 minutes to work and then takes three separate images of the blood vessels at the back of your eye, one straight ahead, then the others looking left & right, while you look through an eyepiece. Not painful, but as the drops keep your iris wide open, the light is intensified, so you end up squinting, which does affect your focus a bit. You're advise not to drive after having the drop in and I always wear sunglasses afterward. The effect wears of after 30 minutes - 1 hour. Nothing to worry about though.

Thanks TonyH, I have had them before but wondered if they do them in Spain. When I was sent 2 yrs ago to my local hospital (in Spain) for one, it was just an eye test and exam no picture,I was told they don't do that here. Now moved so wondering if they are given up here in Torrevieja.

Yes, I have. It was the same as the one in the UK. I just asked my GP to refer me.
