Rule on Carrying a Passport for Non-Resident
Rule on Carrying a Passport for Non-Resident
by Sandra » Sat Aug 29, 2015 3:35 pm
The Foreign Office say that you should carry a passport, at all times, when you travel to Spain. As it is such a pain if one gets lost or stolen, what do most people do? Do they have their fingers crossed that the latter doesn't happen. I was told that you could have photocopies taken of passport and/or driving licence Has anyone has been stopped and only had these - and are these readily accepted by the police??

It is the law in Spain that you must have all your Documents with you if you are driving a car. Perhaps you've noticed the Spanish men carry manbags.

You do not need to carry your passport.
If you have a Spanish driving licence, the police, guardia, etc. all take that as sufficient ID.
Otherwise, if you need to have your passport as your ID, then you can have it photocopied and authorised.
You can have it photocopied at the British post shop above the golf course, then take it to the town hall who will stamp it (free), then return to the post shop where they will reduce it in size to that of a credit card & laminate it and that is accepted.

Many thanks for your replies. I have had my passport and European driving licence miniaturised, but not authorised! Do they do this at Quesada Town Hall or would I have to go into Rojales?

You have to have it authorised after photocopying and before miniaturising.
You take the photocopy with your original into the town hall in Rojales - 1st floor, 1st desk - & he stamps it free. (I don't know if they can do it in Quesada.)
Then you take it back to where they photocopied it for miniaturising and laminating.

Brilliant post. You learn something every day as I always find it is always difficult to take your passport with you as it won't go in your pocket easily.

Hi it may have changed but we had it miniaturised then stamped at Rojales but that was two years ago if you ask at the Post Room they will give you a definitive answer.

The reason that I got mine stamped before miniaturising was because it was then laminated so had to be stamped before then.
I had mine done at the English paper shop next to the Olde 9th above Supa Valu at Quesada golf course, who did the photocopy for me to take to town hall and return for them to laminate & they wouldn't take any money until they laminated it.

It all works as above as I did it today and our copies were reduced and laminated at The Post Room in Beniofar. The whole task took less than 30 mins including the trip to Rojales Town Hall.
