Sunday shopping law change?

Does anyone have any more info on this short news item? I wonder if it affects markets also.

No. it does not affect markets. It does affect large stores (under a certain size, shops can open on Sundays and bank holidays hence places like Gama).
Only large shops in designated tourist areas like Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa etc can open without restriction on Sundays and bank holidays.
The Valencia parliament scrapped this on Wednesday and now large shops will only be able to open on 40 days in the year that fall on a Sunday or bank holiday. As there are over 60 such days in the year, then places like Zenia Boulevard and Habaneras/Carrefour will have to close on about 20 of those days in future.
Shops like Consum and Lidl which open Sundays July/August/September will not be affected as they do not open more than the 40 days.

Thanks for the clarification. 40 days seems rather arbitrary and I imagine it will lead to some confusion.

That's the law throughout most of Spain and was the law here until not that long ago. Habaneras and Carrefour didn't open on Sundays until Zenia Boulevard was built and opened in 2012. It was granted special tourist status and Habaneras and Carrefour applied, and got it, just afterwards.
I wonder how this will affect the big tourist areas like Benidorm?
Mind you, this is only the report from the CB News and I haven't read it anywhere else.

Sorry, should have said "was" the law in Spain. Torrevieja was granted Special Tourist Status in 2013 and Madrid and Valencia in 2012.

Is it not something to do with baking bread ?

And? Orihuela Costa and Torrevieja are classed as tourist areas so can open on Sundays. Your Lidl in Playa Flamenca can do so as can the Carrefour. Lidl in Quesada, though, can't.
This law is going to stop all that and the Lidl in Playa Flamenca will only be able to open 40 out of the about 60 days affected.

Supavalu comes under the small shop rule where shops under certain square metres are allowed to open. Same as Gama, Johnsons and so on. No, I don't know the size that is affected.

It's because it's a tourist area.

Edit: I'd just like to point out that this is only being reported in CB News. I can't find anything in the local Spanish papers or any of the other freebies.

According to the Spanish press (DiarioInformacion) the large shops will close on Sundays and holidays after the January sales until the Easter week, then close after Easter until the first week in June and then open right through to the January sales. So no Sundays or holiday opening most of January, all of February and March, most of April and all of May.
No indication that I can see of when this will start.

Was at Carrefour's today and this was on the main doors going in, the red squares shows the days that they will not be open starting from this Sunday
