Why are 2nd hand cars so expensive?
Why are 2nd hand cars so expensive?
by nigieboy » Sun Dec 04, 2016 3:25 pm
I am looking for a newish motor and am perplexed as to why 2nd hand vehicles are a 3rd more expensive over here.
Been told also that full service histories are not usually available on cars over 2-3 years old.
Any reliable garages locally?

Possibly the pound falling so much? New cars and cars up to about 3 years old are pretty comparable to UK prices, even though we calculate it at the current exchange rate. After that they tend to hold their prices until even 10 year old ones go for thousands of euros. All good if you're selling but not so good if you're buying, especially with a poor currency.
The first car I bought here was a three year old Ford Focus for €7100 or about £5000 at the exchange rate then.
I sold it two years later for €7000 so good on them holding their prices for me. However, I have seen a similar car but 5 years old at the same €7000 which is now over £6000 so doesn't seem such good value.
Try and avoid the second hand dealers on the coastal and big expat areas like Torrevieja (or even here). Most of the main dealers have a second hand bit where they have taken part exchange and they seem better value. Elche might be a better place to look, though, as they do seem a bit cheaper there.

Second hand cars are cheap in the Uk because the market is only really the uk. You could add India, Japan and Australia to name a few but the cost in export would be prohibitive. The euro lhd drive market is potentially the whole rest of the world.

In the uk you have many fleet cars hitting the market when they are 1,2,or 3 years old so keeping supply up and prices competitive..in particular the mobility scheme where cars are sold off by the goverment after the benificiary is updraded to a brand new car.. many of these are fully loaded low mileage high quality vehicles that enter the market very cheap. This is without all the ex police and other govt department vehicles that are sold at public auctions... this simply does not happen in spain all ex govt vehicles are sold trade only...keeping prices high.
Also the high cost of transferring vehicle ownership helps stifle the market.
In my humble opinion anyway lol

Over 2 years ago i bought a 2nd car from Jack Orwin who owns Club Cars at La Marina ,at the time i thought thats expensive for a 2002 car but since then the first expense in all that time was last week when a brake bulb had gone 13 euros it cost, i would certainly recommend Club Cars and they do the transfers also.

Hello,
The cheapest cars I can get in Germany are from the UK (maybe because they are RHD). If you see the German and other Dealers here they all go to Germany and buy there most of their used cars. So take a look in the ads from autoscout24.de or mobile.de and fly with Ryanair for € 25.00 to Germany buy a car and get a Spanish Plate here.
All things to do was made by Amanda and I pay aprox € 900.00 for it (don’t do it by yourself). It only takes a while. I was lucky and buy my BMW E93 Convertible with very low Miles cheap for € 13.000 in Germany and the cost all together was aprox between € 14.500 and € 15.000. I saw the same car with nearly same Miles in Mil Anuncios for about € 22.000. at the same time.
If you need help I can try to help you.

Spanish mentality is different to that of the UK - they don't have the same 'have to get rid of it after 2 year' plate mentality as they do in the UK. It's less of a 'fashion' thing.
People seem to also hold onto cars a little longer.
Also one thing I have learned in Spain - is the value of anything in Spain is determined by how much the Spaniard decides it is worth, rather than the seller !!!
Not always realistic - if you look on the car sites, you will see the same car, same mileage and year and quite a variation of prices. I've seen 2-3 year old BMW's at only a couple of thousand less than new!

Cars also do not rust as much due to no salt on the roads

Hmm...Judging by the big mountains of the stuff around Torrevieja and Santa Pola I would think there was a lot of salt in the air...however.

I believe that all second hand cars sold by dealers have to come with a I year guarantee .
