Hi,
Do you have a new house or are you on a new development? We had this for the first year or so after our house was built. It appeared to be the smell of stale/stagnant water, almost a nasty sewage type smell and, as the house is a holiday-home, it was worse each time we arrived for a couple of days. We thought it was the new plumbing pipework in the house, which obviously joins up with the other houses, being under-used and not being naturally flushed out because in time, after more people moved in, the smell went away.
However, when we arrive each time now, the first thing I do is always flush the toilets a few times and run fresh water down the sinks and bathroom to clear any stagnation.

sometimes they do not proper traps in showers and the force of the water draining from the could be having a suction effect on the drain from the shower, best to get a plumber to check, i had to fit double traps and anti-siphon valves on some of my pipework to stop the problem.

jan

the water in the waste traps will evaporate in 3 or 4 days in hot weather, i have seen toilet pans completely dry in 10 days it is not stagnant water it is a lack of it,if someone has keys to you property have them run the taps for a few seconds 1 or 2 days before you arrive, should stop any nasty niffs

our house is 30y old and we have lived in for 11y, we still get the smell. It is proberbly because the spanish don't use S bends and allow the smell to come up. I have tried all sorts. The best thing is to cover the drain hole :liar:

Hi Jim

Yes you are correct one thing that causes a problem wit smell and people don't realise is a lot of people have bidet's but don't use them and you really need to run the water for a few seconds every 3 to 4 days as you say.

i get the same problem and i think it`s because there are no `S` bends, the shower in our en suite stinks the place out, i have to keep the door shut.
i dont know how we can get to the drainage/plumbing cos it is under the house, has anyone had anything done about this and was it costly?

forgot to mention, when we empty the sink in both bathrooms, you can hear the water draining out through the beday plug hole. not very good and proves there are no `S` bends in the drainage.
i would really like to get this sorted, i am fed up with the smell of sewage in the villa.

Ours is not a new villa, we are thinking of taking the shower tray out and fitting an s bend then refitting the shower tray but this will have to be higher so will have to go on a frame. This will be less expensive than digging out pipes and this is how it is done in the uk. We do not have a bidet in this bathroom.t In our ensuite bathroom we have a bath but not a shower and have no smells in there.
Thankyou everyone for your replies.

In our last house we found that they had nt fitted any pipes under the bath so you can imagine the smell of damp from all the rubbish underneath only discovered when my husband took off a tile

I had this problem in the UK with a shower that had a very shallow pipe run. I bought a product by 'Mr Muscle', I think it was drain cleaner in an orange bottle, about 1 litre in size. Poured it down the shower drain hole, followed instructions which were to leave it for 10-15 minutes and flush with clean water.

I didn't hold out much hope of success but BINGO.....problem solved for £4 . Give it a try.
