Hi , we have just moved here and started making a few enquirys ...
Believe to get residency you have to show a income minimum of €600 a month for 6 months and must show you have private medical insurance if under 65 ...
Sure someone will give you a more in depth reply

Not if he has a contract for work as he will be earning a wage and paying into the social security system.
The British consulate have a good guide on applying for and ID number and residency for those in employment.

If you have a contract you will be given a social security number. If you are paying tax, and social security within that tax, there is no charge for health insurance as you will be covered under the state health system.
The €600 a month (ish) and health insurance (either private or state provided on the S1 scheme) is for EU pensioners and not for those in employment so don't mix the two up.
Two totally different scenarios.

Do you have an NIE? That's a foreigners' ID number. You can't do anything in Spain without one as it's your tax reference.
It's explained on the British consulate site I posted on what documents you need.
Article 3: Supporting documentation
All applications for registration must be accompanied by the applicant’s passport or national identity document, which shall be valid and in force. If these documents have expired, a copy of these and the application for renewal must be produced
In addition, the following documentation will be required, depending on the applicant’s circumstances:
a) Employed workers must produce a declaration to the effect that they have been hired by the employer or a certificate of employment. These documents must include, as a minimum, details of the name and address of the company, tax identification and Employer’s Social Security Number. Presentation of an employment contract registered with the corresponding Public Employment Service or a document of registration or situation similar to registration with the corresponding Social Security System will be accepted, although it will not be necessary to produce these documents if the interested party agrees to have his details checked against the General Social Security Finance Office files “Ficheros de la Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social”

Thanks marcliff for info
Myself and partner both have private pensions in excess of €600 each so we would have to get health insurance as we are both around 58 , both have nie...interestingly we didn't need a NIE to open a bank account which I didn't realise ...live and learn

Here's a bit of useless information (I really shouldn't have so much time on my hands)
Did you know that although we say you need a minimum income for residency, the actual amount is not stipulated. It simply says "sufficient funds to support yourself and your family" which, I suppose, could depend on your lifestyle.
However, there is a Ley de Presupuestos Generales de Estado (Law of General State Budgets) which states that a person requires the an income equal to the state pension. This is where it gets funny. The average pension in Spain is around 950 euro a month. This is because the Spaniards pay more than the minimum 4.7% pension contributions or have a separate pension fund. The "welfare" pension, that is where someone has retired but did not pay into the state pension, is €340 a month.
I think the ruling is actually based on the full state pension that someone would pay over 35 years and retired at 65 which is €588 a month (note the pension age is going up in Spain, just like UK, to 67).
If your income is above that mentioned in the Law of General State Budgets then that is classed as sufficient income to support yourself.
Sorry for the thread drift but just though some might be interested.

Sorry to original OP for hijacking his thread.
Another query
Our personal pensions and rental from uk house are taxed in uk .....if we take Spanish residency do these become taxable in Spain
A friend who is in a similar position to us has got Spanish residency but still pays tax in uk ......all very confusing.....well at least to me
