You can stay longer than 90 days. You are supposed to go on the register of foreign EU citizens if you plan to stay more than 90 days but I wouldn't really bother. As long as you are here for less than 6 months it would be a waste of your time even doing this.
You are not a fiscal (liable for tax) resident until you intend to stay for more than 183 days in a year so the register would be a bit of a waste of time unless you are desperate to obtain an NIE number (foreigners ID number required to buy property, open a bank account and other things).

As this post is over a year old, can I just check whether this advice is still valid? We are coming over at the end of October to stay for 5 1/2 months, we plan to sign on the Padron and get a temporary SIP card from Rojales Town Hall and I thought we had to sign on the Register of "Extranjeros" but would be quite happy if we didnt have to do the latter.
