All done. Really easy when you know what is needed. First make an appointment (Jan has posted number above) Application form x 2 Passport PLUS 2 copies, Very recent Padron (Plus copy) Proof of income or proof of private medical cover) Copy of bank statement stamped by your bank. If pensioner, original copy of S1 PLUS copy. The copy of bank statement will confirm your pension "income".

Stamp, stamp, stamp, sign, sign, sign and come back next week to collect. phew

Just an update on residencias. My friend went 2 weeks ago because his had been stolen, although he didn´t realise it was one of the stolen items until he needed it. He went to Orihuela to ask for a copy and was told to be a resident you have to have proof that you have a minimum of 5000e in your bank account now ! He explained he only wanted a copy as he has been a resident for 9 years but they still wouldn´t give it to him. So what exactly is the rule now if you lose or have yours stolen, not everyone has that amount of money in the bank.

That sounds ridiculous! If he's already a resident surely it will be registered with the powers that be and he could get a copy or at least proof that he is a resident. Maybe it was 'lost in translation and hopefully someone can advise on this.

Hi, we have just got to Spain and intending to move to Quesada later this year - we are not sure if we will be "living" in Spain or just doing "long visits" - we have read so much conflicting regarding this - is there a legal requirement for us to register as residents? Also how much does this cost and what is involved (on pension) we have kept our English address and as far as we are concerned that is where we actually live.

Different areas seem to have different rules and as we are just learning Spanish the authorities here (La Azohia) do not seem helpful at all.

If anyone can simplify this it will be most helpful. Thanks Laura

Go to Playa Flamenca to get your residencia appointment..they will give you the forms to fill in, then give you another appointment to hand them back. After that, they will give you yet another appointment to pick up the card for residencia!..It's all very strange over here, but once you have done it, thats it..additionally, as you go into the Ayuntamiento, on the left hand side sits a guy who deals with the SIP cards for your health requirements. His name is Abraham, and his English is impeccable..he will help you to get everything right..hope that helps.

Hi Laura,

We have a holiday home in Quesada but live in the UK. We do not want to be Residents and prefer to stay as Non-Residents.

As long as the time we spend in Spain does not add up to more than 6 months, we know it's OK legally for us to stay as Non-Residents.

It's simple really, if you don't stay longer than 6 months then you can stay as you are, no problem (and pay a non-residents tax in Spain plus all normal outgoings as we do) but if you really want to stay longer, then a Residencia application is the legal way to go.

Hope this helps to clarify things for you.

Jan

PS. You could wait and see, as there's no hurry to become resident until you are sure you want to or will be staying longer than 6 months. See how it goes - you may like the options open to come and go...mid- Summer in Spain can be hotter than you imagine (great for a holiday but living is a different matter), Winters can feel colder than you expect - Some people absolutely love it and don't want to go back at all, but some some prefer the freedom of coming and going. See what suits you by spending some time in different seasons before making a decision, if you have the opportunity.
