The Padron - To be or not to be!

The Padron - To be or not to be!

Postby Jan » Sun May 04, 2014 10:22 am

Hi,
We are non-resident and have been on the Padron for the last four years. We have now been asked to sign up again and there is so many different views on this, so we went to the town hall and asked if we should be on it.

The emphatic answer was that as we all use the services, such as dustbins, street cleaning and street-lighting etc, then we should be signed on whether we are non-resident or resident.

We were told it had no relevance to any taxation issues and that more people should be on it to ensure proper maintenance of the areas and urbanisations and finance for services at the town halls. It seems that money is given by central government to maintain & service the local area according to the number of people on the Padron.

We had an idea that this was the case but were hearing so many differing views that it was becoming a bit confusing.

Be interested if anyone else has anything to add on this subject and if they agree with what we've been advised.

The basics of being on the Padron as I understand it even if you are non resident the council receive more money from central government for each person on it so is beneficial to everyone, also it is advertised by Rojales town hall that you should be on if you are Non Resident we had a flyer from them I have looked for it but unfortunately I can't find it, it did state that it was absolutely nothing to do with taxation. the Sip card makes it easier if you need to visit the doctors my partner needed to go and was seen the next day.

Cheers

However, some, depending who you speak to at the town hall, disagree & when we went to renew our Padron when we wanted to buy a Spanish car for which we needed an up to date Padron the guy we saw was very verbal about how we, as non residents, should NOT be on the Padron. We had forgotton to take our NIE's which was a Godsend or he'd have removed us promptly. He pointed to a stack of papers & said "all those non residents are going to be removed!"

We left it a week then returned ensuring we saw someone else who was most polite & encouraging & renewed our Padrons without any fuss.

Recently, I was unfortunate to be ill, needing to go to Torrevieja Urgencias for attention. I gave my EHIC card to them. I was told we could both get SIP cards if we went into the Town hall. The lady there was very welcoming, asked us for our Padrons. Worried she'd remove us we made out we didn't know what she was talking about. She explained that, as property owners in Spain..even non resident property owners .. We should be on the Padron. She disappeared & returned with brand new Padrons dated that day.

She went on to explain that we now could have SIP cards valid 6 months because of being in the Padron. She said she could only give us 1 month SIP card if we were NOT on the Padron.

Please be aware that you MUST keep your EHIC card up to date. We went back a month ago to renew our SIP cards & were asked for our EHIC cards. These were expiring in June (we knew that & now have renewed these) so he could only renew our SIP cards till the expiry date of our EHICs.

:text-goodpost: Thanks.

We will have to get a temporary Sip card, as we are not getting any younger and it could come in handy - We always have the EHIC for emergency treatment (plus annual health insurance) but assume the reason for the temporary Sip card is to allow easy access to a local doctor (correct me if I'm understanding it wrong).

Correct Jan also you get 50% discount on cost of any prescription which makes quite a difference depending on what the prescription is for. On the SIP card there's a sticker that gives you the details of the allocated Dr.

Hi Silverlady,

A Padron (not Pardon, but lots of people read it that way, easy mistake!) is a kind of certificate that you get free from the town hall. Once you sign on, you are then on the Padron register and, as said above, the more people on the Padron means better maintenance of the areas and urbanisations and finance for services at the town halls. The money is given by central government to maintain & service the local area according to the number of people on the Padron.

There is no charge for the Padron and it is also needed if you buy a car and sign on for health services, which is highly likely if you are resident.

However, as explained above, Non-Residents and Residents should sign on.

Hope this helps. I'm sure others will tell you how to get one and what to take with you - We did ours years ago and I've forgotten what we took with us as renewal only needs our passport.

Have just signed on the Padron (we are not residents). Went to the first floor of Rojales town hall with NIE Passports and house deeds.
They photocopied the relevant parts and then printed out a form to show we had registered on the padron.
Was in and out in 10 minutes.
It was so easy and the man we saw was so friendly.

It has already come in usefull as my Suma for the car was being sent from Rojales but showing the car registered in Torrevieja. Showing the padron as proof of address to Trafico has reduced my Suma bill by 50 euros.

There was no charge for signing on the Padron.

We are thinking of signing on the Padron and obtaining SIP cards when we are over next week. Can anyone confirm please if you need to show your original NIE's and property deeds or will photocopies suffice.

Thanks,

Hi as far as I am aware you need original NIE, passport and your EHIC card you need to go upstairs in the Town hall for the Padron and then downstairs next to the bottom of the stairs for the SIP.
