Mugging

Hi all - feel so sorry for this poor lady . Apologies for this long post but I think it's important to bring these matters into the open. My husband and I have a holiday home in Dona Pepa and are hoping to move over permanently in the summer when we retire so we are obviously concerned about this and thought I should let you know the following. I have just spoken to my brother who has been staying with his wife in a rented apartment in Torrevieja over Christmas and New Year. Last Saturday afternoon 14/01 he was walking back to his apartment (he'd just popped out for a paper) in the Aldea del Mar area (Roentgen) when at 13:30 a car pulled up beside him and two oriental girls jumped out (he thought they were Thai but could have been from any Asian country). They asked him the time and he obviously told them without thinking. They commented on his 'nice watch' and got back in the car which a man was driving and drove off. However, just passed his gate they stopped again and the girls got out and propositioned him and tried to grab his arm. My brother has difficulty walking and uses a stick so when they grabbed his arm he pushed them away as he realized they were after his watch. He punched one away and hit the other with the stick so they pushed him over and ran way. Although they didn't get his wallet or his watch, he has hurt his back and cut his hand. However, the worst damage has been done to his confidence and his wife is now scared stiff - he says they haven't slept since Saturday. He reported it to the office which manages the apartments but not yet to the police. Unfortunately he didn't get any details of the car as I think he was just in shock. We're coming over at the weekend and will see if he has any further details but I'm sure it does help if we can inform each other about these incidents without causing too much panic among expats - these things happen in the North East as well - but of course it definitely pays to be vigilant and not wear anything of conspicuous value. Sad that anyone asking me the time now will be looked upon with suspicion - even, as this was, in broad daylight!

Even though these incidents are few and far between I have started carrying a pepper spray and wouldn't hesitate to use it. I hope the lady who was attacked in Dona Pepa is okay, I also live in the area which is generally nice and quiet. Stay alert and safe people.

These muggers ( from the description ) have been operating all over Torrevieja and surrounding area .
Last week they tried the same thing in El Galan area , nr Villamartin.
Until they are caught , it's fair to assume that they can appear anywhere .

It's a good idea wherever we live to carry something like that. UK and Spain.

The apparent increase is worrying as always felt so very safe in Dona Pepa and Quesada Anywhere I have walked or driven . Must be stopped . All must make an effort to be careful and report anything suspicious and try to get car details . This is not good for morale

I agree it's best to be prepared. Where would you buy pepper spray from locally?

Pepper sprays are illegal and carry the same fine as carrying a knife.
My son got fined €800 recently for carrying one in his car.
A noisy siren is allowed to attract attention.
Any weapon that could be turned back on you is dangerous to yourself.
