How do you apply for NIE
How do you apply for NIE
by Samfromcheshire » Mon Feb 01, 2016 11:00 am
Hi there. My wife and I have just moved to Quesada. We are renting for six months before we make the final decision to buy. I need to buy a car and my wife wants to get a part time job, both of which we need an NIE from.
Can anyone tell me where we have to go to apply for an NIE?
Thanks in advance
Sam

Hi
There are lots of topics and posts about NIE's on this forum. If you put NIE into the search box (top right) above you can read some of them while you are waiting for answers from the members.

I also still don't have my NIE number! I did contact someone to help me do it, but she just sent me this message:
"Just to keep you updated. The police station have stopped taking appointments from anyone other than the gestorias and all bookings have to be made online. I am at present unable to access the system and it seems that the only way to get an appointment is via a lawyer for the present moment. I am so sorry I cannot make the appointment and it's possible the situation will change but please can you contact your lawyer and they will do this for you. Once you have the nie let me k ow and we can meet to register the car.
Good luck. It's very frustrating at the moment regarding matters of the nie and taxes in Spain and I hope that you have more success through your lawyer. "
So now what? I urgently need this NIE number as I have to change my car to Spanish plates and also, I want to register as self-employed as soon as I got all my ducks in a row.
I don't have a lawyer and really cannot afford to spend €100+ on this as I still have to get the car through ITV (and needs a bit of repairs first), pay the registration and the import tax etc. My Spanish is no where near good enough yet to do it myself, with the added problem that I am in the UK in between to work. This is why I got someone to make the appointment for me, so when I get home next week I can go straight there with all the right documentation, because if I only make the appointment when I'm home, the date will probably be when I'm away at work.
I really can't wait any longer as my car is now illegally on the road, as the German TÜV expired!! So I am starting to panic!
I hate having to do all this on my own and wish my Spanish skills were better! I am doing the on-line course, but somehow my brain is just taking it all in much too slowly!
I read the other threads about the NIE number, but I have not really found any useful info, as most of the post seem to be related to buying a house.... (I wish!)...
So, any advice or help would be much appreciated.

Thanks Jan, that part I know, it's the actual going there and making the appointment ahead of time (as explained above) that is my biggest problem. If I do it when I get back next week, chances are the only available appointments will be when I'm at work again! That's what happened with the girl that did my original booking, the date she got me was when I was away, so she gave it to someone else (And I did tell her when I was not available).
Also, WHERE in Torrevieja do I go? I have got all sorts of confusing info on the various websites and has anything changed since last year, as I read this on another forum but the posts are dated mid 2015. If it is true, then it seems like my best options:
" the town hall at Playa Flamenca has an oficina de extranjeros and there is a girl there who deals with everything like NIEs and so on. Although it joins on to Torrevieja, it comes under Orihuela Costa and the NIE is issued by Orihuela which is why it takes a couple of weeks to come through. "
and
"Depending on where you are, you can either go to the station at Calle Arquitecto Larramendi, 3, which is along Avda Habaneras heading towards La Mata.
Or you can go to the town hall at Playa Flamenca (park up in the Mercadona) which has a foreigners department. You won't get the NIE immediately there, though, and will have to go back a few weeks later to collect it."
Darn it... having to do anything bureaucratic is my pet hate...
And thanks for the forms, that does help a lot!

I may be wrong on this but recently I have been told by two different people that when they were buying a car they needed to be on the padron. I bought my car five years ago and only need my NIE.

I agree with Chrissieb's frustration. My stepson went to Torrievieja with Spanish speaking friend to make an appointment and was brushed away with a website address. It's irritating. He is going to work here and only wants to sort out his tax and SIP (ie be legal) but the Spanish seem to want to make it as difficult as possible. I feel we are going round in circles. He will earn a very low wage in a bar and it seems very unfair to have to pay 2/3rds of a week's wage to a lawyer to get an NIE.

You don't need a padron to buy a car. The rules now state the padron is only for those who live here as a main residence so that would mean non-residents couldn't buy a car. When they were handing them out willy nilly to everyone then the car dealers required a padron but that was some time ago. Now just an NIE is required.

You can get an NIE at any National Police station or foreigners' office. Go to the foreigners' office at Orihuela Costa town hall (Playa Flamenca) and book an appointment. Most of the others require you to make the appointment online.
Playa Flamenca will mean 3 visits, though, one to make the appointment, the appointment itself and then a week or so later to collect the certificate.
