Just my luck! I had to get it first when buying a house and as it only asted 3 months then had to go get it renewed for buying a car ... and the second one was also only a 3 month one so at some point I'll have to go get it again !!!!!marcliff wrote:No, the NIE number and certificate now lasts for life again. ...... It's only if you got one during the couple of years the system was in place and it has a run out date on it that you need to update it. Your new one will be valid for life.

Whereas, if you'd ticked the box at the bottom that says "de no residente", you'd have got a non-resident certificate that would have been valid for 2 years and not bothered with the NIE because the number is yours forever. Simply renew the non-res cert every 2 years. Of course, living here permanently, you'd have ticked the "de residente" box and got a resident card valid for life.
Of course, if nobody told you that in the first place it makes it very difficult. Our British consul doesn't seem to advertise these things very well. The bit about the non-resident certificate only appeared on their website just as the run out date for the NIE was being cancelled.

Hi Rod - Matt drives you to Orhelia Police Station, he has already made the appointment so you are only in there about 30 minutes, sign the paperwork, done!

If it has a renewal date or a valid until date on the bottom then you will need to renew it. No date, no need to renew.

Heard so many different comments about NIE What is the Truth ? We have our NIE certificate that is stamped , but has no date on it. We have been told if it has no date then it's still valid.
One of the local residents said in order for us to purchase a car, all we need to do is go to our local town hall with our passports, utility bill & our old NIE certificate. We would then obtain 3 copies for us to keep at 70 cents per copy. Another resident said that you can get your NIE certificate updated by your solicitor for 150 euros.
I know which I would rather do, but don't want to turn up at the garage with the wrong paperwork only to be turned away.

Are you a resident? If so, then all you need is your resident card. If there is no date on your NIE then that it is valid. It is only the ones that are dated that are valid for 3 months.
All they are doing at the town hall is giving you certified copies. If there is an expiry date they will need renewing. No expiry date then no renewal.
€150 for a solicitor to do it? Yeah, right.
The car dealer may ask for an up to date padron which the town hall at Rojaless will do for both residents and non-residents. These are free but, although valid for 5 years, must be within 3 months of issue to be accepted. Again, there is no charge for the padron certificate or the renewal.
Your NIE number is valid for life. It was only during a period when they started putting expiry dates on them that they were only valid for 3 months (the certificate, not the number). We have had our NIE for nearly 15 years and never used it because we have a residence card with the number on it and that is all that is required.
