Answering your original question, Calle Blanca just up from Goyos restaurant. Matt fills out the forms and handles everything.

Hi guys,

This may appear to be a silly question but why do you need to renew your NIE?
I've had my NIE number for 15 years now and I've always thought it lasted until you either leave Spain for good or your number is up, excuse the pun.

The NIE number lasts for your life but the NIE Certificate only for 3 months. So if you are buying or selling a house, car etc. the authorities want to see a valid certificate that is in date. The process is basically a nice little earner.

No, the NIE number and certificate now lasts for life again. They made the certificate last 3 months so anyone getting one could either register as resident or non-resident thus making the certificate defunct. It didn't work because not many people got a non-resident certificate so they have changed it back again. It's only if you got one during the couple of years the system was in place and it has a run out date on it that you need to update it. Your new one will be valid for life.
You can't update it at a town hall, it has to be a National Police station or foreigners' office. The one at Playa Flamenca (Orihuela Costa) just happens to have a foreigners' office in the same building as the town hall but you can't go to just any town hall and have it done.
