Opera on the big screen outdoors in Orihuela
Watch Madame Butterfly broadcast live from Madrid on June 30
Orihuela is to join in the bicentennial celebrations of the Teatro Real in Madrid with a live retransmission of Madame Butterfly in the Plaza de Ramón Sijé on June 30th at 9:30pm.
Councillor Mar Ezcurra said one of the Madrid theatre's objectives is to make opera part of life in cities, which will be done with this free showing in one of the most emblematic plazas in Orihuela.
The town hall will set up a big screen in the middle of the historic part of the city with seats for everyone who wants to enjoy this magnificent work by Giacomo Puccini.
Madame Butterfly is one of the most performed operas in the world and is about the tragic story of a geisha called Cio Cio San. It concerns the clash between two irreconcilable civilisations but this production has been given a twist by the stage director Mario Gas who has transposed it to a film set in the 1930s.
