OK here's directions...
Take Motorway towards Alicante.
At AP-7 / A-7 junction exit - was called exit 30 - towards Elche, then take first exit off roundabout onto CV-850.
After about 600 yards, turn sharp right into Camino de Castilla o Montfort del Cid and after about half mile veer slight left into Cami de Montfort.
Follow for 2.7 km & turn left onto Camino de Sta Maria for about a km when road will turn left.
On right will be the path to El Cau (signed) .
Park on left & walk.
I attach car route (in blue) and close up of walking route in red - only about 5 mins, stoney ground, but worth it.

Wow! Thank you everyone but particular thanks to you Martin. I can't wait for my husband and grandson to see this place. It literally sounds awesome - normally a much over-used word.

This is worth a look at Santuario de Santa María Magdalena (Novelda) a beautiful Church with the worlds only stone organ , also near an interesting Moroccan triangular castle

Also not to far from Agost where you can see local potter Emil Boix at work http://agostfetama.es/index.php/es/alfa ... emili-boix

Also whilst in Novelda, a visit to the modernista house in the calle mayor is worth a visit.
It is a house built during the art modern period and has been done out/left inside completely as of the period with murals all over the walls, period furniture, etc.
When you find the building, just open the door & walk in and the glass door will be locked.
But wait a minute and either someone will come, or the door will suddenly open - its controlled remotely from the town hall who see you on the cctv camera in the lobby - then just walk round it.
But go during Spanish hours of course.

Yes and the town hall/information office is also worth a look as they have a preserved room there too which they are happy for you to look at.
I attach a map showing part of Novelda with road to the sanctuary markd & suggested parking for visiting the house & town centre, as the Calle Mayor (main road) is narrow with no parking.

Thank you Martin the Artist, we have just spent an enjoyable morning at El Cau which we had never heard of until you mentioned it in this thread. Your directions were spot on although I used the co-ordinates in our sat nav. The scenery around was wonderful as well as all the painted rock carvings.

I've found loads of free things around if you're interested. For instance you can visit guardamar and feed the wild squirrels and semi wild peacocks. Just not bread as that damages their body. There are a few ducks there already fairly sick from it (which you can easily see due to their deformed wings). If it's not too busy and the squirrels are out, you can actually get them to climb up your arm!

There's also a fanatic short hike through some bamboo forests and a canyon with a swimming hole at the end in rio Chicamo that's definitely work checking outand a snorkeling spot in torrevieja that is sheltered and home to lots of fish and even the occasional octopus!

For more free stuff I'd recommend checking out this link and hope you find something worth doing (:
