So pleased for you. When he's running free you could try using a training line(basically a long lead that's designed to trail on the floor) or any old bit of thin rope would do. The line is designed to drag on the floor behind the dog and in an emergency you can either jump on it, or if you have time pick it up! Might just offer him his freedom but at the same time give you peace of mind. I've used a training line with all my dogs- which means it's not such a transition from being on the lead to complete freedom.
