Shopping for bedding and household linen

Postby Audbro » Sat Nov 23, 2013 7:41 pm

Hi Folks,
Just about to finalise the purchase of our new home in Quesada, yipppeeeee!!!!!!:-). Not too familiar with the area yet. Looking for advice of where to buy quality bedding and linen locally. Items such as double sheets, pillows, pillow shams, quilts and covers, blankets, cushions and cushion covers, towels, dish towels. Guidance would be much appreciated. Cheers. Audbro

We bought our place last year and have ended up buying all bedding, towels and house linen in the UK and taking over there. Vacuum pack is your friend!
The quality is just not the same in Spain and if you purchase in the UK in the sales then it will make it worthwhile the extra cost of luggage. Just make sure your suitcases fit one inside the other to minimise cost on return journey. We purchased ours at the local Dunelm Mill but am sure there are plenty of good suppliers in the UK.

Well, there are some good bedding shops here but, yes, they do tend to be more expensive than UK. However, with Primark, Laura Ashley, Zara (which are actually cheaper than Zara UK) you shouldn't be spoiled for choice. Be aware, though, that bed sizes in Spain are different to UK. If you've brought beds over from UK, the Spanish sizes (except for King Size) will be different. As will bringing linen from UK if you bought your beds in Spain. The size of a double bed in UK is 137 x 191 cm. In Spain they are 140 x 200 so a bit of a difference. Single beds are virtually the same in both countries except for length which is an extra 9 cm in Spain. King Size are virtually the same but a Queen size is about 8 cm wider and very similar in length.
The big supermarkets sell bedding but they are pretty poor quality, very rough cotton and so on.

Entirely agree with JeremyB's post. The quality & value is much better in the UK and with the Sales and offers around it may be best to buy from the UK.

We bought bed linen in the UK and were glad we did, as the material in Spain we found wasn't very nice at the time. Although there is a shop in the Los Arcos road (turn left before the Arches) that sells British quality bedding nowadays, but we haven't checked it out. We did buy our pillows from a similar UK style linen shop in Dona Pepa when we first moved in (which has since closed down but the shop in Los Arcos looks like the same shop) because the Spanish pillows in 2005 were the long bolster type ones. We also brought a few extra vacuum packed pillows from home too, in our suitcases.

The Spanish are not 'big' on duvet's so, if you want them, it may be best to bring them too. Although the Spanish do sell very nice pretty bed-covers (like what we used to call an eiderdown or counterpane). We have a holiday home, so are not there in the coldest couple of months of the year, but we brought some 'lightweight' fleece style blankets (from home) and use the bed-covers on top for when it's cooler.

Although with the Primark now in the Zenia Boulevard, you can get some pretty good quality towels, cushions, tea towels, fleece blankets and bed linen too. They are the same as at home in the UK and same prices too, so it may be worth checking them out, if you have time, or just bringing a few necessities from the UK and then buying extra's from there. We didn't have somewhere like that when we moved in to our new home, otherwise we would have bought most of this kind of stuff from there.

Good luck with the move - Exciting times - I still remember that feeling!

You folks are sooooo helpful, will try the store etc in Dona Pepa and will take it from there. Primark for towels is a brill idea. Will also see what I can get in the January sales and vacuum pack as you suggest.

Your knowledge is so invaluable, thank you all again.

I don't rate the Primark towels, we tried their best quality and they were awful, they shed a fine fluff which covers everywhere even after many washes. El Rasso market has a guy selling UK towels and bedding, various makes

The English Bedding Shop, which was virtually opposite Iceland has, unfortunately, closed down. However, the guy that ran it still has a stall on El Zoco market and has some good quality items at reasonable prices. However, our best buy was the memory foam pillows that Primark sell at €10 each. There is also a, slightly larger, Yorkshire Linen place behind the Habaneras centre.
