Tree roots in sewer

Tree roots in sewer

Postby 2Sheds » Mon Feb 06, 2017 11:31 am

If anyone has had tree roots blocking the sewer, any tips?

About 6 years ago we had a problem because of next doors trees. The sewer was cleared and an inspection hatch was fitted.
Now we have the same problem again. I now realise that I should have been more proactive and kept on top of the problem (even though the inspection hole is in next doors garden).

I've managed to partially clear the blockage. But I'm wondering if there is any chemical I can use to rot or kill the roots around the sewer pipe. I've heard that salt may help to keep them under control. Any views?

Some years ago i had same problem, Spanish Builder who dug it all out poured Diesel over the exposed roots, said it always worked. So far so good.

Copper nails are not a quick fix and can take years.

Diesel will work, it will kill anything.

If it's the neighbours tree that causes the problem, then killing it is the best solution, personally I cant understand why anybody would want to plant a tree so close to a building, solely for the amount of problems that their roots can cause. I wonder how many of these tree roots have actually made their way underneath your buildings, damaging or weakening the foundations?

Thanks for the advice.

My neighbour doesn't live there. It was the previous owners that planted the trees (conifers).
I'm inclined to attempt to kill the trees that are close to the sewer pipe, though I don't want to make it too obvious!
If I regularly use salt water, would that do the trick (less obvious than diesel) ?
