RHD car
RHD car

Hi, we are planning to drive out early next year to live permanently and hang on to our four year old Ford Focus and putting it on Spanish plates etc. Other than the cost of new lights, reregistration etc, are there any great drawbacks from having a rhd car in Spain? Any problems with servicing, repairs etc?

I honestly wouldn't advise it.
It can make overtaking especially dangerous.
It attracts the attention of the police.
It costs quite a bit.

No real reason why not. Nothing is unsurmountable in relation to this, even the overtaking bit!!

Just like driving a LHD in the UK.
Not impossible of course but roads in Spain are designed for LHD cars.
I've done it but didn't like it.

Hi,
If you're going to live here permanently, I would definitely recommend buying a LHD out here. You are far less likely to make a mistake and it feels so much more natural. If and when you did come to sell your Focus in the future, nobody wants an old UK RHD.
Your choice. Good luck when you come out.

Don't listen to the naysayers or perhaps nervous or poor drivers. Brought my car over last year, re-regd it through Leigh Blann at Spanish Number Plates Tel 00 34 671 608 503. No problems whatsoever, just watch out for poor driving disciplines, the Spanish think they are all Alonso in F1 and the brits think they are superior to everyone else. They don't practise the courtesy that is standard in the UK when driving here.

Brought mine over 2 years ago. Re registered by Graham Shelton, Spanish Number Plates as above. Really pleased I did. It was my car, I had it from new so I knew it's history and reliability. Graham organised everything for us. No regrets whatsoever.

We brought ours over 2 years ago, as I don't use it in the UK and the OH is resident and she's happy driving around in it regularly. Probably the only minor drawback is the car park barriers, which are obviously designed for LHD. We wouldn't have been able to get the true value of our low mileage, nearly new car in the UK or Spain, but when it dies, then we'll go for a LHD automatic. Second-hand cars in Spain are relatively expensive and some dealers are proppa Arfa Daley's and some new car dealers aren't much better either - your decision.

I,m with Tony H.few little problems car park tickets, some road junctions need to be observant with some of the drivers here, they do seem to be far less courteous and dangerous at times (roundabout,s oh boy)try and source some lights before you get here although should be cheaper here it's no real problem driving,my solicitor did my paperwork very reasonably.
