Help with changing light switch
Help with changing light switch
by Roach » Mon Sep 18, 2017 3:22 pm
Hi, i am in the process of changing the housing of one of my light switches. The left side (not in photo) is a single light switch which i have done no problem but the right side (as shown) is a double light switch which seems to link to the left side. As the layout of the new switch is a bit different, and as i haven't done one before, i got a bit confused as to how i should wire it. Can anyone experienced in this sort of thing help me out?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

Hi i have another problem if anyone can advise at all.
I am trying to wire 3 light switches this time in the same room. The first switch (attached picture) is near the door. The other two switches are either side of the bed.
The issue i have is getting all 3 to work independently from one another. What is making it difficult for me is that all switches have different colour wires from the next switch. The switch near the door (see photo) appears to have 2 black live wires, and two grey wires. The 2nd switch near the bed just has 4 grey wires. No coding at all. And the 3rd switch which is the other side of the bed has a brown (live??) and 2 grey wires.
Assuming the 1st plug from the photo is correctly wired (probably not), how do i add in the other 2? All switches are the same type as per the photo.
Any help is, as before, greatly appreciated.

Without more details, including photos of each switch, it's difficult to know exactly how your system is wired.
In the photo you've posted there are 4 wires, but two of them are connected to the same terminal on the switch. In the switch that has 4 grey wires, do these connect to four different terminals on the switch, or are some of them connected into the same terminal on the switch?
You should take a look at this website:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiway_switching
Compare your wiring to the various diagrams - my guess is that you have a variation on the "Traveller" system - and see if it helps you make more sense of the wiring.
You really need a test meter and a length of wire to allow you to trace which wire is which (with the power off and the the wires disconnected from the switches. You'll need to label each wire first so you know how they are wired at the moment.
Grey wires are generally used to identify the switched live. If you look at the light fitting in the ceiling you'll probably find a neutral (blue or black) and a switched live (grey) wire. The grey will connect back to one of the switches and one of the switched will have a live feed (probably brown).
Pete.
