That's probably what he was on about then but lost in translation. It was one of the employees that was telling us.

Hi I am with the LA CAXIA bank , but because I am not residency they take quite a bit of maintenance cash from my account , even when in credit .
Anyone suggest a bank that will give me interest on my cash. The bank only pays out direct debits and SUMA accounts for me .
I would love to hear from readers what is the best bank for expats.

All the banks make a charge for non-residents. Maintenance fees, non-resident certificates etc. It is only if you have a regular income, such as a pension, paid in that they give free banking. Generally around 700 euro a month or more (depending on bank) which is not really on if you are only visiting.
They all also have deposit accounts which pay interest so you could set one of those up.
As a resident, we have one of our pensions paid in monthly so get free banking and 1% off the utility bills which we pay by direct debit. That's with Bankia but they don't pay interest on the normal current account. We have a seniors deposit account where we put any left over money into but it pays a derisory 0.2% interest monthly. Hardly worth having it, to be honest.

Thank you for the useful information , I will most probable open a pension account ( temporarily )
I am undecided if I will remain in Spain , ill health will be the deciding factor. I am thinking about putting the house on the market next week when I return to Spain.

I've been transferring money in for the past few weeks so was under the impression it was all done and dusted weeks ago. Also been using the Caixa app on me phone which seems more user friendly than the Barclays one was.
