Iberdrola - monthly or bi-monthly?

Iberdrola - monthly or bi-monthly?

Postby fuzzygirl » Sat Mar 11, 2017 7:55 pm

What's the reason for electricity being billed either monthly or bi-monthly?

Is it to do with frequency of meter reading in an area, or fitting of smart meters?

I receive my bill monthly, but I know of others who get their bills every two months.

Smart meter billing is every month and will be the actual reading. Non-smart meters are every 2 months and may be estimated.
They don't need to read smart meters.

Are you sure that is right Marcliff? My daughter and son-in-law have a villa in El Raso and get billed monthly but they dont think they are on a smart meter as it doesnt say so in their portal.

Everywhere I've lived here (Villamartin area, Los Altos and now Quesada) the bills have been every 2 months. Only last year when we had smart meters fitted did my bills go to monthly. It doesn't say so on my bill and I never got a letter, just about a 5 minute interruption in electricity when it was fitted. Most of the holiday home owners won't even have noticed that.

Very interesting, I will let them know.

If I remember correctly Iberdrola's website says they have an app which lets you check the usage on your smart meter wherever you are. Have you used it?

Yes, they do, but it appears you need a device fitted in your consumer unit, at a cost of €55 + IVA.

It is not just Iberdrola that bill every 2 months, when we switched suppliers,, they also bill us 2 monthly.
I am on a Smart Meter.
Electricity in Spain has now been deregularised, the same as UK. There are about 50 different companies you can chose, for instance you can choose a company which only supply (ostensibly) from Solar, similarly Wind etc..
If you have the time and inclination you can check their costs of electricity to see who is the cheapest, or if you are GREEN which suits you best etc....

Of course, you can always opt to pay monthly if that suits you better. They will take a regular, monthly payment from you and then balance it out in (I think) about September each year. If you are in credit, they will refund it and if you are in debit they will add it to your next year's payments.

Hi Marcliff - sorry to sound thick...but how can you tell whether you have a smart meter? Is it something "in" the house, or on the wall outside, or would it not be "visible" to the consumer at all?

Thinking about it, I think we have a meter on the wall outside (I've never read it!), and there are red/green lights showing through some of the meter boxes. Is that an indication?
