Hi All. Going to visit friends near Cadiz. Flying to Gibraltar from manchester. Looking to hire car. Not been before so unsure about border crossing into spain with hire car etc. Anyone done this sort of trip? Any thoughts/experience on the car hire would be appreciated.

Hi, I have done this many times as I used to work on ships in GiB & drive home to Rojales at weekends.
It is a few years since mind but from my experience I would definetly hire the car from LA Linea on the Spanish side. Reason being, depending on time of day/amount of traffic at border crossing & indeed the mood of the Guardia Civil/customs inspectors you could be queuing for hours. They once pretty much dismantled my Hertz hire car before I started hiring from Spain & I was over three hours late getting away. If you come through on foot it rarely takes above a few minutes.
I used to hire from a company with an office facing the border called aguirre (possible incorrect spelling I'm afraid) & also found them much cheaper than Avis, hertz etc at the airport.
You could ask the airport companies if they will allow pick up/drop off on the Spanish side but I'm not sure if they would oblige.
Hope this helps,
Dave.
