Driving Licence Brexit

Postby solwayiceman » Mon Dec 24, 2018 9:35 am

Moving to or living in the EU

If, after exit day, you become resident in an EU country you would not have the automatic right under EU law to exchange your UK licence for a driving licence from the EU country you’re living in. Depending on the laws of the EU country you move to, you may need to take a new driving test in that country.
You can avoid this by exchanging your UK driving licence for one from the EU country you move to or live in before 29 March 2019. UK licence holders who do this, will be able to re-exchange for a UK licence if they return to live in the UK.

This is sensible advice even if just precautionary, regardless if you live in Spain & drive you should live by the rules changing your licence when due. If you have done that then there is no problem whatsoever.

You should read this:

If you aren't a member of the Costa Blanca Forum (it’s a sister forum to this one) then you should join it.
There’s a long list of these “Jim’s Guides” which are an invaluable source of information.

People shouldnt be driving on a uk licence here once they become resident anyway. If non resident shouldnt be here for more than 90 days before becoming resident and submitting a tax return.

There’s nothing (currently) stopping a resident driving legally on a UK licence, provided they and their UK licence meet certain criterial.
If you follow the link to the guide I posted above you’ll see that information.

That’s not to say that post Brexit (assuming that happens) the situation won’t change, and the advice to swap onto a Spanish licence while that option is freely available is sound.

Merry Christmas all.....

Just a thought, so all the EU citizens who’ve taken residence in the UK have taken the British driving test have they ?......... I don’t think so

Stay safe all.
