That information came out in August last year when the UK stopped adding the unused period to passport renewals for that very reason . . . .

It’s it exactly a news story, the British government flagged this up a while ago and has since stopped issuing passports with more than a 10 Year validity period.
My passport was one of those affected, as I had a validity period of 10 years and 5 months, so despite having a printed expiration date of October 2019 it’s end date (from a Schengen perspective) it’s expiry date would be May 2019, so could be useless for travel after Brexit - depending what rules end-up being applied.
I’m currently applying for a new passport and I have to say that the whole process is great when you do it online. You just fill-in your details online and either upload or link to your new photo, then send them your old passport. They send you an email and text message when your passport has been received, and presumably will do the same when the new passport is on its way.
Current turnaround times are apparently 3 weeks.
Pete.

Our family have just renewed 2passports and applied for 1 new baby passport . . .took 8 days from posting old pasports off to new ones arriving . . . .
The online photo is easy too, you just take a selfie on the phone - don't need to be too picky about getting head and shoulders right, upload it and it adjusts the picture to passport format, tests it and indicates if it is suitable or not with a big green tick (or presumably red cross if not) . . . .

Yes online easy enough but costs £75 when completed in UK but £89.50 when the same application is done in Spain Grrr. Nothing to do with postage/courier charges they are extra. I double checked with passport office and they say just the way it is!
