Expats or immigrants?

Postby JaimeNichols » Tue Mar 02, 2021 12:10 pm

I was just wondering if there is a better label to refer to people who emigrated (fully or partially) to Quesada? Is one of them offensive and should be avoided?

Very interesting, I think problem is some find both offensive, people moving to a country other than own are immigrants, but lots of people only seem to class 3 rd world people as this. Ex pat can also seem to be taken as offensive, but to me it's just people been over sensitive.

Genuine Question,
(I have already posted it in "Rapid Visas for those who want to stay over the 90 days")
I had never thought of the term "expat" as insulting, previously I have used it without any thought that I may be giving offence.

Does the term "immigrant" imply an intention to gain Spanish citizenship (dual-nationality)?

Neither term offend me to be honest. I did however find it amusing when my wife & i were moving to Spain some 21years ago & my dear old parents told everyone we were emigrating, i always associated that term with people moving to Australia & other long haul destinations. I guess they were though correct in their terminology.

I like to think that we're (so long as you're resident) Legal Immigrants...It would bode well for a lot of ex pats when they shout & moan about living in Spain (& other Nationalities) Why come & want to change the place we choose to live? If you don't like Spain as it is go home to where ever you're from ..Simples!

Why do you think the term Expats is offensive to some? I think its really interesting how people categorise themselves as one or the other

Maybe. In the forums I keep hearing about causing offense, any idea who is being offended?

Because if you read comments on here some do, I personally don't care, and can't understand all the sensitive people who get offended at anything. Also those who don't read posts correctly.

That's really sweet. Can I ask why did it make you laugh?

I am a bit confused. What is the relation between Expats and wanting to change Spain? Does this not apply to people who refer to themselves as immigrants as well?
