So to make this clear, are you saying that by having residency, the Spanish themselves will cover the total cost of your health cover? So a person who may never have paid a penny in to the Spanish system will have full health care. That is rather generous of them and will cost them a fair few bob I guess?

As far as I can make out the Spanish do not cover the cost of the UK Pensioners' expats healthcare, they claim it back from the UK. The UK pensioners who are entitled to health care in Spain, after becoming Resident, have generally paid in the National Insurance system in the UK before coming to live in Spain.
Obvously those who are registered to work in Spain and make national insurance contributions can get state-run health care on the same basis as a Spanish national.
Expats under pension age, arriving in Spain to live, may have to make their own arrangements for health care.
Here's a link that gives the 'arrangements' for healthcare as they are now but this will be subject to change in two years time or when negotiations have concluded:
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/healthcare-in-spain
All we know, at the moment, is the above will stay in place while negotiations are taking place for the UK to leave the EU, which is expected to be at least 2 years.
The free EHIC card covers unexpected and emergency health issues while on holiday (non-resident) in Spain, although it has always been advisable to have a travel insurance policy as well to cover certain things that the EHIC will not cover.
The EHIC may continue after the UK leaves the EU but it appears to depend on the Trade/ Free movement of people in Europe and therefore what the UK eventually manages to negotiate as to whether we get access to it in the future.
As said before, we are all in the dark at the moment as to what the future will hold for Expats in Spain but I hope I have explained more or less correctly the situation now. If not I'm sure someone will correct me.
Jan

Good morning Valencian man.
Is it a secret how you got your medical cover? Why not detail it on the forum thereby probably helping many others.
I am not being rude or otherwise, it is just that I see so many forum members saying that they will pm someone with the information.
Jan, can you once again put this recommendation on the website to note the info on the forum for all.
We had a nightmare trying to get the "Convenio Especial" medical cover only last year. We pay €60 monthly each for full Spanish medical cover, including any existing health problems. You have to pay 100% of your prescription costs though. We are both under 65 so do not qualify for a SIP card under the usual prerequisites as many do. Hopefully this will help others with any concerns.

Healthcare after the Referendum (Don't worry)
I think that it is irresponsible to offer an assurance based on hearsay. Let's wait and see what is agreed, if ever we pull the Article 50 card.

Yes we always say whatever information or answers that our members have should be placed on the forum for all to see, as the forum is here to help everyone. The only exception and main reason to use the private message system if for personal details such as addresses & phone numbers.
Please think of others before Private messaging and place any helpful information on the forum!

Completely agree....there's little point in a community help and advice forum, if useful information is only exchanged privately !

Sorry if I have upset some people by choosing to offer my experiences only by PM. I felt that as I was mentioning a lawyer by name it should be private. Is it so hard to PM?
