Padron, Temporary SIP post-Brexit
by iain » Sat Sep 25, 2021 12:09 pm
Please forgive me if this has been asked before.
We are non-residents from the UK who visit Spain for about 5 months on and off over the course of a year.
Before Brexit we used to sign on the padron at Rojales town hall more or less every six months and this also entitled us to a temporary SIP card every six months for our local health centre, though thankfully we never had to use the SIP cards.
Just wondered if anyone knows if either or both of these are still available to us post-Brexit?

You can use the new GHIC (or EHIC if it's still in date) when you visit. Not sure they'll do a six month temporary SIP card anymore as you are limited to 90 days to visit.
They just issue them so they have your EHIC on record and don't have to complete the forms every time.
The only non resident visitors near me who used to get the temp card haven't been out for nearly 2 years so I don't know if they are still issuing the temp SIP cards. One neighbour who was out in the summer had to go to the GP and they simply used his GHIC.
Of course, private travel insurance is a must when visiting as the GHIC is quite comprehensive but doesn't cover everything.

Many thanks marcliff.
We do have our in date EHICs and travel insurance but always thought having a named doctor at the health centre was potentially even better should anything go wrong.
Do you happen to know anything about the padron? Should we still renew it at Rojales town hall even though we're non-residents and it is post Brexit?

No holiday home owners should not register. The padrón is only for habitual residents of Spain. Registering could have tax implications as the person inscribed is stating that they habitually reside in Spain. This was from citizens advice Spain.

We renewed our pardon 2 weeks ago. Went to town hall in Rojales with GHIC Cards, passport and padron. Got sip card for 6 months. Had place in Spain for 20 years and never had one before. But as we are getting older thought it was a go idea. We have holiday insurance also.

Rojales has long been know as a place where padrons were handed out virtually on demand so what goes on there should not be taken as a reliable indication of the situation elsewhere or in general.
Some years ago I got my initial padron there by telling them that I needed it to buy a car which was true. I also told them that the address I was giving was that of a property I was renting from a friend whilst arranging to buy it so didn't have a formal rental contract which was a fib although I was staying with him. They accepted that without further question.

I’m just back from 62 day stint. Home owner in Quesada, and will be back and forth a lot moving forward.
Never “got round” to doing padron, and this year I had a health issue which needed GP assistance. I went to the GP directly with my EHIC, they issue me a temp SIP for 2 months, and was seen within minutes of arriving. This was at the Lo Marabu surgery.
Also just purchased a Spanish car, and had to be on Padron to register the car, my solicitor in Spain handled the exchange of the car, but said padron was required.
I hope my latest experiences will help you, real time, with your queries

Many thanks for all the replies.
Think we will go to Rojales town hall with our EHICs, passports and previous padrons & temporary SIPs and see what happens. They can always say no!

We went to the Quesada town hall with our old padron - the lady there took it and we collected our new padron the following day. She did not ask for any other documentation but we asked her to take a copy of our new passport which she was happy to do
