Visa applications to live in Spain

Here's the link for applications to apply for a visa to come and live in Spain, post Brexit, if anyone's interested. There are a number of different visas, depending on whether you want to work, study retire etc. There aren't any visas for swallows. Not at the moment anyway.

If you want to retire over here, you'll have to show a minimum income of 2,156 euros a month, for the 1st applicant plus another 537 euros a month for any subsequent application. You also appear to have to apply, in person, by appointment, in London, on a Tuesday or Thursday morning!

This process does not appear to take account of persons who own property
(no mortgage) in Spain. It mentions nothing about home owners. I can only presume a monthly income, as stated (2,156 euros) includes the expense of renting a property? If not then who spends 539 euros “a week” on living expenses (one person) ? Seems to be more questions than answers! If all the above figures are correct than it can only mean Spain wishes to discourage persons from applying for a visa - which in a post pandemic economy doesn’t make sense (does it?)

That might come under the bit that says "or the holding of an estate that guarantees the perception of that income". I would imagine that ownership of a property here would count for a certain amount, that would otherwise have to be paid in rent, towards the minimum amount they require. I agree that it wouldn't make sense if it didn't.

What you're advocating is grossly unfair discrimination between those who can afford a second property in Spain and those who can't.

No discrimination, if you can’t afford a property in Spain you have the option rent. Do we penalise people who can afford to buy in Spain? Whatever, to me it will make economic sense to encourage people to come to Spain, spend their cash and boost a post Pandemic Spanish economy which (like the UK) will be billions in debt.

Bizarre statement. The visa process itself is by its nature discriminatory - if you don’t earn E 2,156 then you would be ineligible.

Assets owned seems a reasonable inclusion and in the case of property, it means net income levels would be far greater with no deductions for rent or mortgage. e2156 or greater gives far more sustainability to an individual who lives rent or mortgage free and less likelihood of needing any state support from the country to which they are applying to live.

I have a question regarding the Financial means required to cover the living expenses when applying for
a Non Lucrative Residence Visa. It says that the main applicant needs to have 564.90 euros being 2.259.6 euros (4×564.90 euros. If you times this by 12 months it gives a total of 27,115.20 euros. Then there is a further 564.90 euros for each family member. Question:

We have to prove we have 27,115.20 euros in the bank for year 1 so, can this initial sum come from savings and also would our pension count towards the amount needed?

I am hoping that someone can clarify this for me.

It all counts. Savings, money from rent, pensions, annuities etc. As long as you have access to it.

Just remember the residency you get in Spain will only be, initially, valid for one year. You then have to renew it and show the same financial means and then, after another 2 years, show it all over again.
If the amount you have in accessible assets isn't met then they can refuse the extension to the residency.

Once you've been here 5 years you will granted permanent residency and not have to show those details after that.

So year 1 is about having proof of 30,000 euros in the bank and year 2 is about 60,000 euros going through your bank including our pensions and you have to have at least 60,000 euros up until year 5 then as you say permanent residency is granted. So it is all income that is counted towards the 60,000 euros including our pension.

Sorry for asking what seems like a stupid question but I feel I am getting immensely bogged down with it all at the moment.

Our visa application will be later this year also. Having read many posts on forums lately, I really do feel for many potential retirees as these monetary figures are going to be a stumbling block for them. 65k euros proof is a lot of money to show at the start of the next two stages of the residency procedure. Most people know they can quite easily live on a lot less than that especially if they already own a property and are mortgage / rent free etc. It's such a shame as many retirement dreams are going to be dashed because of this (in Spain anyway).
