Bringing Parrot to Spain from the UK

Bringing Parrot to Spain from the UK

Postby pepsiandniko1 » Tue May 28, 2019 5:49 pm

HI Everybody
I am looking to move to the Quesada area with my Dog and Parrot. I would like to ask if anybody has recently bought over a Parrot or any other bird from the UK.

My Dog is fine as she has her Pet passport, but with the Parrot i have to have an Application Health form and tests before i can get him to Spain. The current information required is a nightmare, so i am asking i if any of the authorities at Alicante Airport keep to the letter of the law in case there is something that i have missed on the forms as i don't want him held in the Customs.

Thank you.

Brian.

However onerous it might be if you care for your pet you have no option but to observe and comply with the rules.

Hoping that at sometime in the past someone at an airport might possibly have turned a blind eye to incomplete or incorrect paperwork and nodded an animal through is very likely to end in tears.

Have you considered using a professional animal/bird transport company, they would know all the rules and regulations regarding air transport, or travel overland as many do with pets with less paperwork and
Regulations.

I read the original poster's (OP's) request in a completely different light - not that they were trying to AVOID rules but that they were struggling to be sure what all the rules exactly ARE , and if the Alicante Authorities had the same rules etc or might have anything extra etc i.e one missed out form that the OP hadn't known about and poor Polly is grounded.

I appreciate their concern... as Johnca suggested it may be better to talk to/use an official pet transporter for the parrot as they will be exactly sure on the rules. Animals go in and out of the airports all the time. It may be more expensive, but less worrying. Otherwise travel by ferry?

We were also told by the vets in England, that to bring our dog and two cockatiels we needed to have our birds checked and then we would get a bill of health certificate to present at the customs checks, we travelled by car through France and the customs officers just smiled and waved us through, reaching Spain, they also just shrugged when we offered the paper work, and sent us on our way, then when we arrived here we asked our vet why didnt they want to know, he said that there is no law requiring a bill of health for birds entering Spain, and when you consider that millions of birds fly into Spain every year what difference is two more gong to make, we realised that its a way of the English vets charging one hundred pounds for nothing that is required. I may be wrong, but thats what we experienced. I suggest that you contact a Spanish vet for verification.

Be they observed or not there are most certainly rules and regulations appertaining to the transportation of captive birds both when exporting from UK and importing into EU and non EU countries.

This may not be the latest information but it gives an indication:

https://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov ... 080708.pdf

The English vet referred to in the previous post was completely correct in pointing them out and the fact the poster(S) weren't challenged when leaving UK is irrelvent.

Thank you for the information regarding the information required for exporting my Parrot to Spain.
It is so much easier bringing a Dog into Spain than a Parrot that is for sure!

I will dissect all the information on the sheet and adhere to what is required!
