Hi,

No changes as far as I know since the last time you asked.
Here's a run-down of my previous answer :

We are with Banco Sabadell after being with Halifaxin Spain, who were taken over by Lloyds in Spain. Both were taken over by Banco Sabadell and since then, even though we were worried about this at first, we have found Banco Sabadell to be very good - The charges are no more than other Spanish banks and in some cases less. We have just a general current account and for this they only charge for the debit cards, like other banks in spain do and a maintenance charge of just under 15€ per quarter for the account. No charges for anything else except the non residents certificate in Spain which all banks charge for.
There is another account that Sabadell have for those paying regular amounts into the account which I think is free of fees but when we looked into this it wasn't suitable for us as it needs a regular deposit made each month and we don't want to do that, as then the fees for transfer from our UK bank rack up.

I'm surprised that SabadellSolbank as you say "seem to charge for almost everything" as we have been pleasantly surprised with the relatively low charges on our current account with Sabadell, especially after being scared by the 'talk' of banks in Spain charging for everything and having a similar experience of dwindling funds by all the charges in our very first account with Bankinter years ago .

As I said before on this topic, we have found Sabadell to be the best of the bunch - Very good customer service too.

Nothing in Spain, after Halifax and Lloyds left the country, can seem to match the UK non-charging banking system I'm afraid. Wish it did!

All banks charge you for non-resident accounts unless you have a certain sum paid in each month. Depending on the bank it will vary but most ask for a minimum of 700 euro a month to be paid in. Some will also waive the bank fees if you have a healthy balance, Bancaja used to be more than €2000 in the account at all times but that was years ago.
None of them waive the non-resident certificate fees every two years.
They will also charge your for resident bank accounts unless you meet the same criteria of paying money in.

Pretty much the same as getting a fiver a month from Halifax if you pay in 750 quid a month and have at least two direct debits. Our Spanish bank gives us a 1% discount on utility bill payments so it's almost like getting paid for having the account with them.

We are non residents, we have been with Caja Rural Central in Guardamar since March 2014 there's a branch in Los Montesinos too. We took out a non resident a/c. I understand there are two different non resident a/cs, one with a debit card, one with a book you slide into the ATM, we have the one with a debit card at 15€ annually, the book is free. Our friends with a non resident a/c with the LM branch have the a/c with the book, they are charged 18€ each every two years for their non resident certificate. We, on the other hand, have a debit card a/c & have not been charged the 18€ charge each. When I we enquired at our branch we were told there's no charge for us for this.

On another very recent post I added details about BBVA possibly having an online account with 0% commissions. link: https://www.bbva.es/eng/productos/alta/ ... ilia=00001

Sounds too good to be true though I have absolutely no doubts there may be a million and one others ways of extracting commissons from their customers via overdrafts, transfers, debits & bankers drafts etc. It's possibly one of these accounts for people aged 26 to 30 which seems to be the current "aimed for" market by Spanish banks.

Does anyone have have one of these accounts? If so, what is your experience of opening and operating online?

DB do not charge if you deposit €500 a month and uses your card twice, or have two DIrect debits. We use Gcen.co.uk to change the money over and then there are no charges at the Spanish end!

I'd wait until your non-resident certificate is due in 2016 if I were you as this will be the first time it is necessary to submit it. The bank itself has to pay for the non-resident certificate (about €10) and some charge the customer as much as €30 for doing so. I can't see them paying the €10 (each) out of the goodness of the bank managers heart.
(On the other hand, you may have found the only bank manager that actually has a heart)

As an extra, the lady at my current bank looked me in the eye (about 5 years ago) when I changed to a resident account and told me, without blinking, that I would be issued a debit card for free, no charge, zilch.
Fine, I got a free card. When it ran out two years later they gave me a new one and have charged me €15 a year for it ever since. When I queried it the very same lady, again without blinking, said that was only for the initial issue one.
When we took out a small mortgage (I was advised to do so as the bank does its own checks to ensure the legality of the property) the manager said, quite categorically, there would be no charge if I paid some of the mortgage off but only when paying it off totally. He even said, hand on heart, pay it all off except for 100 euro and then we charge 1% on the balance so your charges will only be 1 euro. Honest, he actually said those words. When I came to pay off 20,000 euro they said there would be a 200 euro charge even though I'd still have a balance of over 2,000 euro. On querying this, he pulled out the banks T&Cs to show this was not the case and I'd have to pay.
So excuse me for not believing anything people in banks say (Mind you, I got the same at Halifax in UK who charged me 150 quid even though I'd been assured there would be no charges).
