Hi, we are with Santander, by the Arches. As long as you are in credit there are no charges. Laura in there, speaks good English and is very helpful.

Sabadell dont charge if you open a pension account and have your old age transferred monthly into the account, and it comes at the inter bank rate. Everyone in the bank speaks perfect English. Also a free debit card. Mike

Sabadell are good - We are with them and are pleased. The branches are in Quesada town and Rojales and one branch is near the Laguna Hoel.

Thank you for your replies. Just to let you know we went to Barclays bank. No trouble at all in getting a savings and a current account and also internet banking. No charges at all. Debit card each, no transfer fees and no fees for cheques either. Cheques may take 2 weeks to clear. English spoken and very helpful. Took a couple of hrs with paperwork but painless.
The bank have been bought out but nothing seems to be changing, only the name. Staff are being kept on.

Opened an account with La Caixa in Quesada, was charged €1 for cash withdrawal.
Didn't use La Caixa own cash point but one in La Marquesa Golf, was the charge because we didn't use La Caxia bank or is they always a charge for cash withdrawals?

The banks in Spain don't operate like those in UK. You will find a charge will be made for most withdrawals if you use a machine from a bank other than your own.
There was a system where 3 types of card were issued, Servired which is Barclays, Deutsche Bank, Sabadell, Bankia and BBVA. Then there's Telebanco which is virtually all the other banks (it should say on the back of your card which one it is). The other is Euro6000 but very few banks use this service.
The idea was that you could use your card in any of the machines that belonged to the same network. Unfortunately, banks like money, and because withdrawal fees became normal in Spain after the breakdown of the economy, most banks have continued to charge if you want to withdraw from a rival company’s cashpoint
You are actually quite lucky with the €1 charge. When I tried to use Caja Rural machine in Elche with a (then Bancaja - now Bankia) card the fee came up as €10 which I declined.
The moral is, always use a branch the same as your own bank. Always worth checking how many machines there actually are. There is a Bankia in Quesada for me but, if it breaks down, I have to go to Torrevieja for the next one.

Thank you for information. I will have to work it out and which is the best way spending, nothing like a free lunch.
When holidaying I usually use a pre paid Caxton FX card, slightly lower exchange rate but better than bank rates. Load before we come out and no charges to withdraw at any cash point but limited to two withdrawals a day and unlimited use in shops and bars. Currently 1.23 to the pound. Can top up online, text or telephone instantly from UK bank account.
Will only use Spanish account for important items rather than everyday spending.
