If you have a Santander 123 account in the U.K. withdraw cash in Spain at Santander ATM with debit card, no fee and good exchange rate and buy with your credit card again no fee and good exchange rate.

Hi Des, unfortunately I haven't a Santander account. The cash withdrawal is a "one of" situation, otherwise I would consider setting one up. Thanks for replying.

If you have an N26 account (easy to open). They say 5 free atm withdrawals per month. So last month I tried it twice. Both atm machines said charge of €2-90 per withdrawal. As I needed cash I went ahead. 8th sept and 15th September, still no deductions by N26 so I assume they cover the cost somehow. Not angry about that. :text-lol: :text-lol:

If your N26 card is registered to your Spanish address that will be why (from your posts I assume you're resident). Same with the Wise card which I use at BBVA. It's free too. It's UK cards that get charged mainly, by the ATM though not the by card provider necessarily.

I've had it in writing from Wise that the address makes no difference. They say its the ATM charge.

Of course it's an ATM charge. What I'm saying is that a Spanish registered card at a BBVA ATM will not be charged, but a UK registered one will. I know because (i) Wise told me and (ii) I ordered a Spanish card instead (the initial digits are the country indicator) and I am no longer charged. The machine says there will be a charge of €2,70 (used to be lower), but I am never charged. This is also consistent with the message you received from Wise.

I think I'll get back to Wise again, as this is my original correspondence and their first answer (it may be that I worded the query incorrectly...maybe I need a NEW account, rather than trying to move the current one):

Hello,

Thanks for getting in touch!

There may have been a misunderstanding. Registering a new card at your Spanish address does not affect the withdrawal fees, as all cards are connected to the same Balance account and share/remember the limitations.

You can take out money for free twice a month — as long as the total amount is under 200 GBP/EUR. But after that, we’ll charge you 0.50 GBP/EUR per transaction. This is a fixed fee. If you take out over 200 GBP/EUR in one month, we’ll charge you 1.75% on top of that. For more information, click here.

This may have resulted on the fees you have been shown during the ATM withdrawal procedure, as you are already over this limit for April.

Therefore, it is unnecessary for you to order a new card. Please, if possible, forward this information to your friends to clear up this misunderstanding.

If there is anything else we can do for you, just let us know, we're always happy to help,

Regards,

Daniel

Issue: Wise card.

Customer issue:
"Hi. I have been using my Wise card for purchases whilst in Spain. Everything fine. However I went to withdraw cash from an ATM a couple of days ago...one ATM was going to charge €7 for the transaction, and another was going to charge €5.

I understand those are ATM operator charges - but I was hoping to withdraw cash with no charge.

Other Wise card users I have spoken to say that I can register a new Wise card at my Spanish address, and that should allow me to obtain free cash withdrawals.

Is that correct?

Regards"

Sorry I can't assist any more than say what I have done, at their behest, and it has been successful. They sent me a new card with a new 16 digit number (I think attached to the same 'account', but can't be 100% sure now as it was a while back) to my Spanish address and I didn't have to pay anything for the replacement card either. As they say, it won't affect your £200 per mth limit etc, but will enable you to avoid ATM charges (if you use a BBVA machine anyway - others have said Deutsche Bank is similar). Good luck!

Some seem to believe there is something special about a Wise account and their card but the basic fact is that absent special agreements with specific other banks Wise have no control whatsoever over what any traditional bank may or may not charge for use of their ATMs.

Those who have opted out of the Spanish banks to avoid their recurring fees and charges and gone totally Wise, and anticipate making regular cash withdrawals, need to carefully choose which ATMs they use to ensure that charges incurred there do not exceed those they were previously paying!
