Can Solicitor pay Sale Funds to Transferwise?
Can Solicitor pay Sale Funds to Transferwise?
by Ian2009 » Thu Oct 15, 2020 5:44 pm
Just wondered - would it make sense to have my solicitor pay the proceeds of a relatively small (in financial terms) apartment sale directly into my transferwise euro account? Then I would convert it back to sterling and move it to my U.K. account.
I know our solicitor banks with Caixabank as we do and she has mentioned previously that there is no charge to move funds from her Caixabank account to our Caixabank account but I wondered what was the cheapest way to get it back to our U.K. account in sterling.
As regards to moving funds to a U.K. bank from Caixabank - Someone on here I think mentioned previously that you could transfer in batches of somewhere in the region of around €15,000 with a few days between each transfer to avoid charges - can anyone confirm that please ?
Thank you
Ps I forgot to say I bank with Santander in the U.K. and don’t have a Euro account hence why I thought transferwise might be the best option? Possibly let the solicitor transfer with no charges to our Caixabank and then I transfer myself to the transferwise euro account over a few transfers? Then convert to sterling and move back to Santander - phew !

Get a Transferwise Borderless account and get the cash transferred into that in euros then you can transfer amounts to your UK bank in uk pounds as and when you need them you can use the account debit card if you need to that's what I do

Thanks jpeg - I do have a transferwise sterling and a euro account - and I declined a debit card from them - so I think I have that? Every month I transfer sterling to transferwise - convert to euros and pay into caixabank to avoid bank charges. But will our solicitor incurr hefty charges (to then charge me) from caixabank for moving say €60,000 to our transferwise euro account? Sorry if I sound a bit dim but I know the banks (worldwide) like a cut of any movements - even if you do it online !!

Yep - I don’t have a problem speaking with transferwise but I think I will conclude their charges are acceptable - but it’s Caixabank I would need to ring or I can into the local branch but I never find them very forthcoming when it comes to charges so I was just hoping someone on here had recent experience of the same thing?

Ian2009 if it's not in and leaving from your solicitor's account and she has the POA then it won't cost her anything.

DTR - thanks for replying - we will be with her on the day but I just remembered from a previous conversation nearly 3 years ago when we bought here she said "oh good we are both in Caixabank so there will be no charges for moving fund's" - which made me think will she incur hefty charges if I ask her to transfer it to transferwise?
I am now seeing her on Monday so I'll hopefully find out then but I just envisage her asking "oh there could be charges" so trying to do my homework.
