charge for withdrawal from english bank at La Caixa bank

Postby Littlechris » Wed Mar 16, 2022 8:16 pm

Yesterday i went to the La CaixaBank at the arches to withdraw money from my english account. As well as having to endure the queue wish is normal now i was astonished to find instead of the normal 2 euro fee it was massive 7 euro fee. Ihave just checked by english bank account and that is what has been taken out.1. Was anyone aware aware of this hike because i was not.2 are they allowed to do that .The place is a nightmare anyway. Might be changing soon. Beware.

That is not untypical for UK debit cards since Brexit. At BBVA it is €6 now I believe, used to be €1,87.

I use a Wise card registered to my Spanish address and there are no ATM charges for that (not at BBVA anyway).

You can withdraw euros from Santander atm with English Santander debit card without charge and at the commercial rate. Maybe you could consider opening a uk Santander account

Why not change your UK bank to Santander? Qualifying UK Santander accounts can make fee free ATM withdrawals at the bank rate from any Santander ATMs in mainland Spain. The money comes direct from your UK account, just make sure you press the "without conversion" button.
We've been doing this for years and thought it might have stopped after Brexit but it still works.

If you only use your Spanish bank account, Caixa or Santander, for a few direct debits, as a non-resident that will probably be costing you c.€150 a year for very little. If it is I suggest you look at Wise and eliminate that cost too.

OK, I thought you must be non-resident because the higher ATM fees for UK cards have been in place since January 2021. I used to have a Nationwide account too for cash withdrawals and other benefits like holiday insurance until I realised the benefits were for UK residents only and I was effectively paying £13 per mth for nothing. There are other fee-free Spanish banking solutions for residents so you would be best to consider them alongside Wise. If you do get a Wise card make sure it is registered to your Spanish address or you will face the same higher ATM fees.
