How easy is it to change banks?
How easy is it to change banks?
by SteveThornbury » Fri Oct 15, 2021 1:31 pm
Hi
We opened up am account, via our Solicitor, miles away from where our house is (Rojales) when we purchased it.
There are plenty of banks in the town but wondered if it's a right faff and difficult?
TIA

I've change banks 3 times. The current bank will give you a list of direct debits on your account and your new bank will set them up for you.
The current bank will close your account but you will need to go back a day or two later before they will give you the money in case you have anything outstanding.
Standing orders (we had 2 for the community fees and broadband) we had to contact the company direct as the new bank couldn't transfer them for some reason.
Of course, if you have money paid in you need to inform the payer of the new IBAN etc.
It was pretty easy and we changed Bankinter to Cam bank then to Bancaja (which is now Bankia and will shortly be Caixa).
Funnily enough, the one that seemed to be hardest was when we tried just to change branches with the same bank. They didn't seem to want to know as we already had an account at a different branch in Torrevieja, hence changing Bankinter to a different bank instead of just switching branches.

Changed banks 4 times and changed branches of the same bank once, had to close the account at my old address and open one at my current address. (I’d moved areas from Marcia to Alicante) the bank did it for me, but changing banks on the whole hasn’t been too difficult

I was looking at a BBVA account (from Santander) and note that they advise they will contact the old bank and do all the legwork to transfer DDs. If that sorts SUMA (council tax/car tax/rubbish tax), electric, water, internet, phone then all that remains is for me to redirect the community fees. Will see just how easy it is soon....god help me..
