If Greece leaves the Eurozone how would this affect Spain?

Postby Pablo Teatime » Mon Jun 29, 2015 11:01 pm

Could anybody please explain to an idiot (me) what the effects of Greece leaving the Eurozone would be for Spain and its residents (us)?
Rise or fall in property prices.....
higher taxation.....
well.....anything really!
Would be most grateful.
Paul.

Good questions been thinking same myself, but won't just affect spain
However I was under impression things were improving in spain but I think
This will have a bad effect, but then I am a natural pessimist lol!
Perhaps someone on here will have a professional answer, but then does anyone really
Know as its never happened before.

What will it do the euro? The exchange rate is good at the moment for the pound into euro. Will it mean good or bad for us changing pounds to euros?
Happy in the sun.

Probably very good for sterling to Euros as if the Euro is being seen as starting to fail the financiers will probably start to pull out and put their money into a safer currency such as US dollars or Stirling.

I would guess nothing drastic they will probably rise very slowly in the short term if the euro weakens with other countries and more people start buying it will push the prices up but the last thing they want is Greece to leave but don't hold your breath you never know.

In the long term, as Greece represents such a small part of the Eurozone, whether they are in Euro, or not, is unlikely to make any impact on either the Euro. Certainly less than interest rate hikes and other as yet unknown world wide events. I guess if other countries saw there future in leaving the Euro after a Grexit, then there could be a major impact from the fear of a Euro break up. I have heard no speculation on that front though.

With regards to property prices, I don't see why Greece leaving the Euro would effect them, unless the Euro was devalued further as in the above scenario. I think a weak Euro helps with the Spanish (same for Italy, France, etc) property prices, as people from other Non Euro countries are more likely to buy at the cheaper prices.

I don't think Spain has a particularly big exposure to Greek debt, so again it should not affect Spanish taxation.

Not a professional, just a personal view.
