Property Tax for Urban Assets: genuine or scam?

Property Tax for Urban Assets: genuine or scam?

Postby TPW4boys » Sun Mar 08, 2015 5:42 pm

Hi, just wondered if anyone can shed some light on this tax please? We have an apartment in Almoradi, and we live in the UK full time. We do not let out the apartment it is just for our use, when we can afford to get over. However last week we received a letter from SUMA Gestion Tributaria requesting a large sum of money in relation to - Property Tax for Urban Assets. We have not been asked for this before and we have had the apartment since 2005. Is this a genuine request or a scam? Any advice would be very helpful.

Hi,

Do you pay a yearly Suma tax already? Suma is similar to the council tax in the UK only much cheaper in comparison, generally between 200 to 300 euros a year. Suma isn't based on whether you rent out or not, it's what everyone who owns a property in Spain has to pay.

If you don't already pay your Suma, then this is probably why you have been asked to pay but if you do already pay your Suma then I don't know what this is.

There's some information here about Suma I found on my Abagado's website:
http://www.abacotaxes.com/local-council-taxes-in-spain

Sorry if you already know this but I can't think what else it can be.

We are non-residents too and pay our taxes through our Fiscal tax representative each year. They also helped us set up our Suma. If you have a Fiscal Rep in Spain you could ask them about this letter.

Hope this helps.

Jan

Just found this information too. With some example of letters - Is it one of these? If so you may need to contact a Fiscal adviser asap :

As this seems quite important I thought it should be flagged up - Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Thankyou for your replies. I agree the tax is payable, as we haven't been paying it annually. We were just unaware of it. We do not have a fiscal representative, but perhaps we should. I was more concerned of it being genuine or not as didn't want to transfer money to just anyone. The tax demand letter is from a company called Suma Gestion Tributaria in Santa Pola. Are they a genuine company does anyone have dealing with them? Thanks again

Hi,
If you go into the official Suma website you can check the location of the offices and the Santa Pola office is on there. To be absolutely sure the demand is genuine you could pay it in the office shown on the website but I know that's not always possible if you are not in Spain at the time but you can pay online apparently too. However at least you can check if the details check out from the website here:

https://www.suma.es/

Santa Pola office is shown here: https://www.suma.es/PortalWeb/cuerpo_oficinas.xhtml

Hope this helps.
