It may be stopping unless you have a uk address. It's in the papers today. The funny thing is it doesn't mention Spain just Ireland Slovakia Portugal Italy and a couple of other places. I don't really want my money here!

You don't need to. If you have an existing UK account you can keep it when you move overseas. Even people living in Australia and USA are allowed to keep a UK bank account. My bank (Natwest) even allows a Spanish telephone number for SMS messages etc. I get my OAP (sorry, state pension) paid to my UK bank and it is handy when buying things from UK like Amazon or Cotton Traders etc.

What is difficult is opening a new account with a UK bank if you are not resident there.

You do need to tell the bank of your change and complete a P85 so any interest (what's interest nowadays?) will be paid without tax being taken but you then declare it on your Spanish income tax return.

Many credit card companies won't allow you to retain the card if you move overseas, though.

I think the article in the Mail about "losing accounts" is a bit scaremongering. There are people living in Spain who work from home and use UK banks for their business transactions etc plus many keep their houses in UK and rent them out and I doubt many would want to pay the rent into a foreign account nor would HMRC be happy about debiting a foreign account for tax due on rental income.

Apparently some who have debit cards with Barclaycard and live in France have been told they will lose the card in November. The T&Cs on my Barclaycard state I have to have a UK address (I use my daughter's).

Worryingly, one Lloyds customer in the Netherlands has been told she will have to close her account in November and the balance will be returned to her in the form of a cheque. The charges will be huge if you have to clear a cheque.

Barclays have informed people living in the EU that there accounts may be closed before the end of the year but that seems to apply to the Barclaycard.

Lloyds, which owns Halifax and Bank of Scotland, have said they have written to a small number of expats to tell them their accounts will be closed although the report states that small number is 13,000 in Slovakia, Ireland, Portugal and the Netherlands.

Hopefully some deal will be sorted out. Interestingly, EU banks in the UK have said their customers can still keep their accounts but the UK negotiators are reported as not making any arrangements to continue passporting.

Strange times.
