We changed from Sabadell to Bankia as Sabadell charges are so high!
Bankia charge 15 euros per quarter for maintenance charges but if you have a pension and have it transferred in Every month there are no charges.
We are very happy with Bankia service.
Happy in the sun.

Sabadell and other banks all do the same. Just compare the charges. It isn't fair to say one bank is so much higher than others. Spanish banks all charge but they all have some bank accounts that are cheaper than others, depending on what you want to do and if you are Res or Non Res.

We are Non Resident and did not want to transfer money each month so stayed with the monthly charges with Sabadell and find them a good bank with great online banking and communications...better than the 3 banks we were with before (2 closed down).

Just shop around by going into the banks you are thinking of using online or in the branch and getting lists of the charges and different accounts to compare.

We have been with La Caixa for years but do not find them easy to deal with. Endless queues in Quesada branch and their online banking quite complicated. Have recently opened an account with Sabadell and find them a breeze in comparison. Online banking dead easy and straightforward and nice helpful people in branch.

Be aware that non residents pay a "foreigners bank tax" and accounts in joint names pay twice as much. We changed from Sabadell to Caixa because we were being charged 30 Euros a quarter.

Santander ZERO account, - free to use just like any regular uk account, ''IF'' you pay 600eu a month in, and have 2 DD's set up (electric and water). branch advised me would still be free for me even if missed paying in on the odd month. so far (6 months) has been totally free, so for me, the best one so far. good luck in your search.

select your branch location carefully though, because unlike the UK when any branch will help you if you are their customer, in Spain, that is the only branch that will work with you when you need to query something. good luck
